  • I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems, it does seem to me that there is an overlying serious problem and you're trying to deal with it with short-term measures. At the moment you're not budgeting for things like car tax, so of course when they happen you're stuck, and we all know that when that happens its a real worry.

I would recommend completing a SOA and including everything on that, once you've listed everything people can here will make suggestions and see if we can give you a budget that pays everything but also budgets for things like car tax.

You suggest (forgive me if its wrong) that a proportion of your money goes to credit cards, that could be the underlying cause of your problem.

One thing i have often done in the past is paid my car tax with a cheque, its not an ideal situation but it does buy you a few days to get the money together while they process it and it clears

  • Do you have an overdraft you could use? I know it's not ideal but it might help in the short term until you get yourselves sorted.

another option is to stick the car off the road for 1 month... notify DVLA online and complete a Statutory off road notification....

bit drastic but depends how much you use the car.

Sorry if this isn't an option.... but i thought it worth mentioning.
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

It's not a short-term option (sorry) but for the ongoing situation, I buy car tax stamps. I get £5 or £10 per month when I can, which means the next time the brown envelope arrives I don't have such a shock.

    Good luck

I think you have 30 days to pay this - so did the car tax run out on the 30 September or was that the end of your grace period?

Car boot sales, stick stuff on amazon, go over to money saving old style and read the incredible Maz and weelz threads on living off £20 for a month or 50p per day per person.

Definately list whats in the freezer and the cupboards and do a stoe cupboard challenge (this was how maz's thread started.)

And DS may have to go to the footie match after next pay day.

RAS is right...your son may have to have his footy match some other time. Car Tax is your priority is your car use is essential.

Do a car boot, do some ebaying etc. You'd be surprised at how quick you can make money if you put your head to it.

    Good luck

I think this has now changed - please see below from DVLA website:
    Release Date: 28/08/2008
Motorists will have greater flexibility when renewing their vehicle tax disc after improvements introduced by the DVLA.

The first of the changes has come about because DVLA has found that towards the end of the month, many motorists taxing their vehicle online or by phone do not complete the transaction when they realise that their tax disc may not be received in time for the 1st of the following month. As a result, from the 1st of September 2008, those buying their vehicle tax online, by phone or by post will be able to legally continue to drive their vehicles for up to 5 days while they wait for their new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply where the new tax disc has been applied for before the current one expires and motorists should continue to display the expired disc on their vehicle, until the new one arrives. This will be of great benefit to those motorists who have to leave buying their tax disc until the last day of the month, because they are waiting to be paid. They can now still do that, but also get the benefits of taxing online, by phone or by post.

If the car isnt going to be taxed soon, the OP ought to do a SORN (statutory off road notice) to avoid an automatic fine through the post.
SOA = Statement of Affairs (to find a SOA Calculator, google 'make sense of cards' & click on calculators tab > Statement of Affairs)
