Cash Transactor / TV Licensing Direct Debit Problem

I was trying to set up a Direct Debit from my Yorkshire Building Society Cash Transactor account to pay my telly license today but the TV Licensing website would not accept it, they said that this account could not be used for Direct Debits. I had the correct 8 digit account number and sort code filled in. I picked the Cash Transactor account because I wanted a way to do Direct Debits separately from my main bank account.
Has anybody got any suggestions? I can't contact the building society until Monday as they are shut.

The YBS account uses a NatWest collection account.

Did you supply the DD originator with your 10-digit account number as the 'reference'?

No, there was only room for one number on the website, it didn't say anything about a reference number and I dont see anywhere on the postal form they sent to put one either.

I have a DD set up on my YBS Offset Savings account (a version of their Cash Transactor account), so it is possible.

In your case, I don't think YBS will be able to help (but by all means ring them to check) because they'll just tell you to give the originator the 'reference'...as is the advice they give on their website.

You're going to have to ring TV Licensing and ask if you/they can manually insert a 'reference' on the DD Mandate.

Thank you YorkshireBoy, I'm glad to know its possible, with some companies anyway! It looks like I might end up sending them a cheque again if I can't get them to insert the number.
