NO GAS BILL. Moved in 9 months ago

We moved into a new build house last march. Still not received a gas bill and no-one is reading the meter. I have been in touch with powergen ( ho ho) no joy and also been in touch with transco and again no joy.

My worry is that when we do get a bill will we be charged on the current rate at the time of billing. I have not taken any readings to date because I only thought of that last night

  • We had a nightmare when we moved into our new build house, the postcode was not on their system and despite us repeatedly telling british gas / scottish power that they were our suppliers we just kept getting telling us they didn't supply us  Transco were no help.
However as soon as we moved in we changed supplier to swalec who are the cheapest here. We got a bill from british gas 5 months after we moved in threatening to take us to court for non-payment, even though we never received any bills  Fortunately as we had quickly changed supplier and I had all the meter readings it was a small one. Scottish power were unhelpful and rude. Swalec have freephone telephone numbers and are extremely nice.
My advice is take meter readings frequently as they will estimate your usage, allocating different prices as necessary. If you have no meter readings you will not be able to prove if these estimations of usage are correct.

I assume you took a reading on the day you moved in......? That's v. important to cover yourself against the previous owners' bills, just in case they 'didn't' pay up you might be liable for more than you've used.
Stick it in writing, tell them how long you've been waiting, tell them who you've previously contacted and when, ask for a response and a backdated bill...

I work for Swalec and there is a transco number you can phone to find out who your supplier is. once they tell you who it is, you can phone them and get a bill asap. it maybe there is no supplier registered (hence no bill), in which case ask for your MPRN(meter point reference number) and choose your own supplier.
i'll publish transco number here tomorrow, can't remember it offhand.

    Contact Energywatch (http://www.energywatch.org.uk/)

I suspect that will be the only way you'll get this sorted out.

    Seconded

I used to work for a major supplier and unfortunately Kittie, this situation can be a bit of a nightmare for both consumer and company. Energywatch can take most of the load off your mind.
  • You lovely people thank you. I had no joy from transco but will now try energy watch
  • I have the same sort of issue (new build still no bill)! We moved into our last this time last year since Jan I have been trying to find out who our supplier is, have spoken to Energywatch they gave me loads of numbers (All 0870 which I wasn't happy about but got the landline numbers from the Saynoto0870.com website). Still no joy! Even with the meter serial number begining and current readings. I was able to get electricity supplier who tried to get me to pay all at once (no way Jose!) so I neogiated with them and paid it off over 6months .. . . .
I saw the note saying that the builders should be responsible I tried this by speaking to them in June, they claimed to have handed the details over (still can't tell me who to!) However Bryant Homes are worse than useless anyway!
The builders have now finished the estate (earlier this month) and left so the details should now have been handed over to the gas supplier. Still no gas bill yet, so I have emailed engerywatch the full details and am waiting to see if I get the details of the gas supplier. Then as it's their fault/builders they can wait for the money as I pay it off monthly.
Any updates for people that have had simular problems would be great
  • Still no joy but I am awaiting a reply from energywatch at some stage. As long as the gas keeps coming then ok. I suggest Bargod that you keep a set of readings so that you do not pay the whole cost at the highest prices after the latest increases. In the meantime I have opened a gas account in my ING budget. I am luckier in that my builders is a smallish company and they are on site for another 18 months. What happens then if they stop paying for their costs?

I am getting a fantastic response via energywatch so thank you Iainkirk. Powergen rang me today and are trying to trace the account. I will not be charged for any gas prior to them getting a first reading from me. What a fabulous result so far

When I moved here just over 3 years ago they told me there was a backlog of work and I waited 7 months for them to read the meter. Then a huge bill arrived. I had been putting some aside for this bill as I knew it would be lots but it was much more than I expected. I arranged with them to pay it off monthly and I've only just finished paying it 3 years later
