Employer not responding

My mortgage company has written to my husbands employer to varify the salary details. Its been 3 weeks now. They tried to call them also. They have'nt responded.It is akward for me to call them and my husband is away on training. I feel helpless now. all I can do is pester the mortgage company. I had already given an official letter with the salary details when I submitted my mortgage application. Is that not enough. Do all mortgage companys do these checks. I am worried about losing valuable time.
