Trying to open a current account

My apologies if this has been mentioned before, did a search and couldn't find the answer to my question.
I'd welcome some advice please on where I might be accepted for a current account. At the moment I have a basic account with Halifax, and an on-line only current account with IF. I'd prefer to drop IF and have a current a/c with a physical bank but don't seem to be credit worthy (not that I'm looking for credit as such).
I applied to Experian yesterday for my credit record, it appears my rating is 'poor' although I haven't any loans, overdrafts, credit cards, mortgage etc etc..my only two debts, a personal loan and a credit card both with HSBC bank, were paid off completely in July 07.
Also does anyone know please how long this rating will be held, and how/if I can change it?
Thanks in advance..

The reason it may not be good is because you haven't got a credit card or anything. Credit rating will go up if you and prove you can handle things, not ingore them completely.
Paying bills in your name, being on electoral roll, paying off credit card and mortgage each monthy (thats the key one, you haven't had any of these, apart from the one you mentioned) which is why its not amazing.
If you want, get a credit card with a small limit on, pay it off each month and be very strict with yourself about it, this will help your credit rating.0 -

Capital One and Vanquis specialise in cards for people with poor credit ratings. They're definitely worth a shot.0 -
Thank you for your replies. What I'm looking for is a current account with a local bank. I really prefer not to have any more credit cards, the one I had is one of the reasons for my downfall before. I know my limits and credit cards and I don't agree0
