Grand designs "eco house" won't sell, so they're having a lottery.

Sorry, I meant "skills based competition".
They want £1 million for it. Hasn't sold, so they're hoping to sell 46,000 tickets at £25 each, so that's 1.15 million.
They are giving 10% to charidee, leaving them with 1.035 million.
If they don't reach the target they'll give the winner the cash pot instead.

Cute, cute, especially like this bit.
Q. What if I enter more than once?
A. Then your chances of winning are that much better. You can enter as many times as you like.
Yoo hoo, pass my cheque book.....0 -
Another one....Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

I notice you can't actually enter the lottery.
I do wonder about the legality of these schemes and whether the 10% to charity is enough of a fig leaf to make these ok.0 -
I love Grand Designs - so much better than any of the property !!!!!! programs where they used to throw a bit of magnolia paint around and sell it on for a huge profit.
Of all the properties on the program I thought this was the one I'd least like to live in. Subterranian gardening isn't for me I'm afraid.
Now if the Tuscany castle comes up in a raffle, then I'm buying a couple of tickets!!Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)

The first one to hit the headlines a few weeks back sounded like a complete scam. If you read the small print, in the event of all tickets not being sold the owners kept the house plus something like 35% of the cash raised (for 'expenses') and paid the winner what was left from ticket sales. Just a cover to run a lottery and take a third of the entry fee, IMO.
On the show, the couple who built that 'eco house' gave a big spiel about being eco friendly and really wanting to live in it. Now they are flogging it off in a dodgy lottery - did they just use the TV show for cheap publicity?--
Every pound less borrowed (to buy a house) is more than two pounds less to repay and more than three pounds less to earn, over the course of a typical mortgage.0 -
Are you referring to the Oldborough Retreat (???) because that most certainly is not a "scam" and I have not seen a figure such as "35%" quoted. Besides which they have already reached 40000 out of 46000 ticket sales.
From their terms and conditions (http://www.winadevonpropertywithfishing.co.uk/terms.php):
"The Promoters will be entitled to retain 35% of the Entry Fees to cover administration and marketing expenditure. The remaining balance following deduction of the 35% is “the Prize Fund”. The Prize Fund will then be distributed to the winning Entrant;"0 -

I can't believe they're getting away with that.
On the other hand, if they do then maybe Barratt could have an interesting new sales tactic.......--

This type of scheme has been round for ages.
I remember one for a house close to me in 2006 ish - had a domain name along the lines of winthishouse.
They sold enough tickets and everyone happy from what I recall of the local paper.I am an IFA (and boss o' t'swings idst)You should note that this site doesn't check my status as an IFA, so you need to take my word for it. There we go, knew I was not dreaming. www.winthishome.org.uk. was the domain in question
Was in 2007 though, not 2006.
Seem to remember mixed reviews of similar schemes beforeI am an IFA (and boss o' t'swings idst)You should note that this site doesn't check my status as an IFA, so you need to take my word for it.
