Electric breast pumps

My wife wants to buy an electric breast pump. Is it worth it and can anyone recommend one?

We currently have a 4 month year old son who is breast feeding. My wife currently hand expresses as she does not get on with the manual pumps. So some one suggested using an electrical pump as its easier and quicker.

Any Ideas?
:money: Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to everyone who has helped.

I had a battery one and found it very good, BUT I was OK with a hand pump too. So I'm not sure how she would get on with a battery one, might depend why she doesn't get on with a manual, IYSWIM.

would be worth talking to a BF counsellor, eg through NCT or La Leche League. Or your HV. You might even be able to hire one. But I'd say get advice, because too much pumping can cause problems because the baby can't regulate supply and demand.

the other thing I used was breast shells, which collected the drips from one side while baby fed from the other. but I did used to flood pretty well!

apart from in the early days when I was taking milk to the hospital for my best friend's baby, it was all a complete waste for me, because DS1 flatly refused to take my milk from anything but my breast!

    Final thought, freecycle ...

  • I expressed quite often when my son was younger. I used a manual pump for quite a while, but decided to get an electric pump as my hand used to ache like crazy. I looked at all kinds of expensive pumps, but eventually settled on a cheapo one from Ebay (about £20 inc postage brand new) and it was fab!!
I could express about 7oz in around 15 mins, which was enough for 2 feeds.
If you want to PM me I can send you the link to the shop I bought it from.
You could also try Freecycle, I know some people are funny about getting things like this second hand, but you will be sterilising it evertime you use it.
