endowment policy/mortgage

I took out an endowment policy in 1982 with my mortgage, the outcome is now in shortfall. I do not understand finance but need advice on how to go about sorting this out, before time is up in 2007, any advice would be greatly appreciated, I really don't understand, and don't know what to do.
