we've had a letter from united utilities to say that there is a water leak either on the common pipe or in a private house. This could be one of the terraced housses on half of the blcok. We know that we are resposinsible. United Utilities have given us seven days to do it!

Does anyone know how we can pinpoint the leak? Find out where the common pipe is i.e. front or back?

United utilities won't help and have told us that they are scheduled to do the work within fourteen days from the letter!

We have contacted plumbers who say that they would have to dig till they find it. None round here seem to have specilaist equipment to narrow it down and are surprised that we have not been told! [This is half a street of houses!] Also say that the vibrations could cause further lewaks to develop!

Any suggestions/ people to contact would be gratefully aprreciated.
Don’t put it down - put it away!

You will need a listening device to pinpoint the leak, if its under grass you will find that it will be growing quicker where the leak is.

You can use the old fashioned method of dowsing to trace the supply pipe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowsing works best with 2 metal rods.

Have you checked that UU are going to charge as most properties are entitled to 1 free repair, so they may do it for free, its worth checking
