I can see some cheap ones but dont know what to look for so any help would be gratefully received.

IMHO, the trouble with golf clubs is it's down to weight, feel and price. Your husband needs to try the club ideally before you buy. Lots of golf clubs and driving ranges do a range of 'used' or new clubs that you can practice with on the range and he can then work out what club suits his style and pocket
I wouldn't recommend buying one for him as you may waste £50 on a club that is too big/heavy/short etc... :A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. It's well worth getting the advice of a golf pro on which clubs to try/buy. Also probably better to ease back into the game with a fairway wood (No. 3 or higher) as opposed to a driver.
New woods can be anything from £20 to £400, second hand can be much cheaper, and with it approaching the end of the season some shops will be clearing out their current stock in anticipation of new ranges coming in over the winter.
I'm with TiTheRev - best take him with you when you go to buy as it's a waste otherwise.

I am in agreement with the previous posts, your husband will have to go with you to get the club. With golf, a lot of it has to do with feel. He's taller than average, so his clubs may need to be 1/2"-1" longer than the standard club. You have to think about the shaft of the club as well, how flexible he needs it to be. That depends on his swing speed which you may not be familiar with. There are a whole host of other things to consider as well which is why golfers try out a lot of clubs before spending the big $$$ on anything. I'd say a gift certificate/card would be good, but I would appreciate it more if my wife had taken me to the golf shop, just my opinion.0

Take him for a round, get a club or two to test, and enjoy the 19th with your new purchase
