PAC code queries

Planning to move number for the 1st time and whilst I get the general idea I've got a couple of queries.

Will my existing network charge me for the code? (Virgin PAYG, been with them a couple of years).
Do I need to transfer the number across to a brand new, unused sim or can I transfer it to a sim I've already used on the new network (O2)?

Reason for asking is that I've got an existing O2 sim with a tariff and terms that I'd like to preserve but with the Virgin number. I've no idea if that's possible though!

Any help greatly appreciated.
