Harddrive clicking for months but has now stopped?

Options
Hello.

I own an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop with Windows XP Media Center edition as the OS.Harddrive make is Hitachi (or so it says in the bios and device manager).

The harddrive had been clicking for months - roughly about 7-8. I know that clicking harddrives don't have a good prognosis. However, for the past week my harddrive has stopped clicking.
I'm very wary to ask if my harddrive has somehow rectified itself because I know that it is unlikely but does anyone have any idea why it has stopped clicking? My laptop has been working like a charm throughout all of the clicking so the harddrive clicking hasn't had an adverse effect on my laptop's performance.

I'm just curious as to why my harddrive has suddenly stopped clicking.

Thanks lovelies.

xx

    Hi,

This could just be down to the over heating of your laptop, because its so compact they sometimes do this as dust particals move inside the machine, it could of just been a gliche with the hard drive, but if its stopped then dont worry! just worry if your machine doesnt start up again!

The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.

have a look on the acer or hitachi website, alot of HDD now have something called SMART, its a system by which the drive monitors itself. You can get software to check this and see if there is a actual problem with the drive. Quite often it will tell you if there is and give you an error code or an RMA number to allow you to exchange the drive for a new one.
I'd sugggest doing this, especially if the drive/laptop is in warrannty.
Your laptop may (for example) have a 1 yrs warranty, however, HDD's used to have a longer period of upto 3yrs.

If it is a fault it will give you an opportunity to backup anything importtant on there before it goes 'pop'!
I lost my University dissertation through a clicking drive and lack of backups.
