Repainting guitar.

I'm doing up an electric Strat style guitar I bought from a charity shop.

I've stripped the guitar down and now just have the body and I need to repaint it.

Would it be ok just to sand the existing paint back so that it is a dull finish, i.e. cut back the glossy finish and them primer, or will I have to go right back to the wood?

Also the finish I want is the same as they have on bikes, that glittery finish. On biles I think they spray them with a fine glitter type substance (sorry, not a great description) then overcoat it with a coloured laquer a few times so that the paint looks as though it sparkles.

Anyone know how I can get that finish.

Never tried it myself and it seems like sacrilege to me! If it was me i wouldn't attempt it myself (especially with the glittery paint effect) and would take it into a music shop that repairs guitars and will likely have done it before.

If you want to diy it though i did a quick google and came up with the following link that may help you.

...quite detailed instructions but looks like alot of effort.

good equipment, and lots of laquer lots... 5-6 thin coats to cover the glitter.
