i'm altering an old toy box to be both a toy box and table. I have some hardboard thats acting as the table top, which i've painted with normal household paint. Thinking about it though i'm worried that it will stain really quickly so is there anyway i can make it a bit hardier maybe even wipe proof? Obviously without spending lots of money. I wondered if i could use p.v.a to make a varnish which could be painted over the top of tyhe paint, Any advice would be really helpful thanks

No!
When PVA gets wet it will go all sticky again, peel off and get everywhere. You'll create untold problems for yourself!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I think the clue is in the question! Give it a coat or two of clear varnish. Alternatively a good gloss paint should be pretty good on it's own. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
as billscarb has said give it an undercoat and gloss it will be fully wipeable
allow it to harden for a few days0
