New Year in Paris/Prague/Rome/Barcelona

My daughter and her friend (students) would like to visit Paris or some big (Prague, Rome, Barcelona etc) city for New Year 2005. Has anyone got any suggestions about the best and cheapest way they could do it?

Have they ever thought of Amsterdam? The whole of the city centre is alive with a mass of people, you get a free and entirely un-regimented firework display from around 11.30 - they just can't wait for midnight (everyone just buys their own and sets them off in the street - Chinatown is the best place!). And there are so many bars and nightclubs open until the early hours (like, 6am...) that you may not actually need a hotel. Travel between the airport and city centre by train is cheap and very efficient, and you can walk just about everywhere. If they do decide they need somewhere to crash, try https://www.hotelscomparison.net (see other threads) to find a cheap hotel deal. Or see if there are any rooms left at the Arena hotel (a kind of upmarket hostel).
Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.

Midnight on Champs Elyses in Paris is just special. Everybody drinking Champagne and having a good time (even policemen on duty are friendly) !

I'd say Barcelona - we went via Easyjet and booked an apartment (6 of us) and paid £50 each for the apartment and about £60 on the flights for a long weekend.

Yep, booked via www.rent4days.com (someone on MSE recommended them to me originally) and booked the Stylish Loft on Born (http://www.rent4days.com/ficha.asp?ciudad=Barcelona&idioma=English&mkt=sinmkt&oferta=&piso=Stylish+Loft+on+Born&fechaentrada=2006%2F10%2F17&fechasalida=2006%2F10%2F24&plazas=6) was really nice and the building isn't great but the apartment, area and customer service was first class. Also ask for a discount, I did and got about 40 euros knocked off, worth a try! Did it all online and via e-mail, they take some via card as deposit and the rest you pay when you arrive, someone meets you at the apartment and shows you round. Worth mentioning, if your after this one only one of the bedrooms is separate, the rest is all open plan.
