Discharge Advice Please

Hi all

Sorry, I've done a quick search but can't quite find the info I was looking for, so I hope I'm not repeating a lot of other threads here.

I'm due for automatic discharge in the next week, and was wondering about a few things:

1. Will they automatically send me a discharge notice, or is that what I have to pay for? If so, as my case is now with a RTLU, how do I go about getting it?

2. Obviously as soon as I have the relevant paperwork and the discharge date has passed, I will be checking my credit file. What I'm unsure of is, I never managed to open a bank account while bankrupt and just had my wages paid into my partner's account. Is it possible to get a bank account with a debit card after discharge, or will I still have to apply for basic bank accounts? Would I be turned down for most standard current accounts after discharge? Do I need to wait until my credit files are 'cleaned up' before applying for an account?

Thanks for all your help and support over the past year or so - it's very much appreciated.

    Hi,

I had to request my Discharge Cert from the court where I was made bankrupt. I called them, they sent me a form, I sent it back with a PO for £60 and Voila! Discharge Cert arrived!

As for the bank accounts, the Co op have a Cashminder account which they allow BR's to open with a Visa Electron card. When I went BR I opened a cashcard account with Barclays. The Barclays account has no debit card or internet banking. Once I had my discharge Cert I was able to open an Easycash accout with Halifax - still a basic account, but come with online banking and Visa Electron.

    Hope this helps.

You won't receive a letter or a copy of a "discharge notice" from the OR if you are getting Automatic Discharge. However, most OR's will send you a letter confirming your discharge if you ask them free of charge.

Or (as mentioned) you can get a proper court "certificate" directly from the court for £60. You can be exempt the £60 if you qualify for court fee remissions, in the same way that you might originally have been exempt from the £150 BR court fee.

Thanks guys. I found the PDF online with the list of basic bank accounts, and there are quite a few with debit cards that allow you to open it after you're discharged. Would I need a certificate to apply for one, or would they check the register to confirm I've been discharged?

    Thanks again for the advice.

I needed to provide a copy of my discharge certificate to open my Halifax account. Maybe your best bet would be to try the Coop cashminder as they allow non discharged BR's to open accounts, so you shouldn't have any problems with them.

I doubt any bank would check the register.
