HMRC Letter to Employer

Any ideas what this is about?
I open all the post at work and yesterday we received a letter from HMRC to our wages dept., saying they were reviewing my file and wanted them to confirm how much tax I had paid from 6 April 07 to 27 Mar 08 (BR date) and from 6 April 08 to present. Surely HMRC know how much tax I've paid.

I don't pay a nil tax code IPA because be went BR right at the end of the last tax year, so why would they need this info?

HMRC shouldnt need any confirmation, the PAYE tax system has it all on file, and a P60 is issued for each employee at the end of each tax year by law, and they get that

and any firm of any size files it all on line, plus tax payments to HMRC (from deductions) are monthly or 1/4ly and logged online too)

So why would they ask for it?
I have my P60, they should have their copy too. I could perhaps understand it they wanted from this April to present, but not last year.

whatever their reasons its no concern for you to worry about, if the OR wants the tax he has a fight with HMRC, maybe the OR wants to verify your stated wages?

how long have you been BR?

id have binned the letter.........job done.

They want to match up what they've been told with what your company says. They'll be the same won't they?
It might be just a random check to see they're paying the right tax and ni through the wages. They do randomly check some stuff - ther are dodgy companies out there who don't pay the right NI etc

The letter wasn't addressed to me, I'd look a right bl00dy fool if I binned it and they then phoned my accounts lady to ask why she didn't reply. Although I was tempted to answer it myself, and would have if they hadn't asked for a contact name and phone number!

    Went BR on 27 March.

Just had a thought, I wonder if it's because my P60 is handwritten, and I assume the returns are too.
I don't think it was random, definitley to do with my BR because they wanted last years tax up to the date of BR, that would be too much of a coincidence!

They won't already have the information for specific dates, they will only have a copy of your P60 which is for the whole tax year, that is if the person requesting the info even has that (and HMRC departments are fairly chaotic, think they were putting everything onto one big computer a few years ago and it was a massive job). Fairly routine, and as I used to do payroll, it wouldn't tell me anything other than HMRC having a query.

Thanks JCS, I suppose it's easier to get someone else to do it than work it out themselves!
