silly q, interest on big savings??
really silly question, sorry. My mum (65) gets about 12000pa in total of what she says is tax-free income (from ex-husband, pension and Disability). she recently sold her house and now has 70000 in savings. does she have to pay tax on the interest? we are trying to work out whether we were stupid to put some in an ISA?!

How do you administer a tenants in common trust
My mother in law died several months ago and as she was caring for her husband we have had to move him into a care home. They had a tenants in common will and their house is now being sold to pay for care home fees. Only half the property now belongs to my father in law and the other half will sit in trust to be inherited…

My Gran
Hi I apologise in advance as this post could turn into a long one... My Gran is 88 and still lives independently, my Dad lives nearby (my Mum died 3 years ago) as does one of my sisters; myself and my other two sisters live in the same county though about 20 miles away so don't get over as much as we would like. My Gran is…

conflicts in retirement
Just had a bizarre conversation with DH re the amount of time we are committed to things which leave us with little time together in retirement. He over-reacted by saying he will do absolutely nothing, then. So where do we go from here? He hates the thought of my telling him what he can or can't do ( agreed!), yet his…

winter fuel allowance
I keep getting told that I should put in my claim for this - because I am 60 now. I'd quite happily do so - since I am both retirement age and retired. However, I'd thought that it wasn't possible to get it these days until you reach your personal State Pension Age. I don't reach my own personal State Pension Age for about…

Care home fees, money running out.
Hi guys, this is my first post, so please be gentle with me! Oh, I hope I've posted in the right place also! My mother-in-law has been in a care home for the last 5 years due to her having a quite severe double stroke. When she first had the stroke my wife and I decided that we would sell our family home and also my…

Any way to put a second property in trust for disabled son?
Is there any way my mother can put her second property in trust for me? She is living in our jointly owned property in a kind of granny flat arrangement and the second property provides her with an income. She is getting on and would like to insure that the property would go to me. The concerns are that I would lose any…

Fixed rate pension introduction brought forward
It appears the government has decided to bring forward the introduction of April 2016. To qualify I believe the number of NI years has been raised from 30 to 35. Does anyone know what will be the position for anyone without the necessary NI years? I need to review whether to buy additional NI years.

Savings and advice
Hi As from april I am told I will get pension credit as no longer due to age get income support as a top up on CA, so would I be any better off if I kept with CA and then I suppose they would top up with PC , so my money would be the same . or give up CA and stay with PC. Free prescriptions for 60 year old
Hi, My DH is now 60. I've just found out he will get free prescriptions and eye tests, but I can't seem to find out how he claims for them. Could someone tell me please? Do over 60s still have to pay for a dental check up? He is working full time, and neither of us claim any benefits. Thanks, Candy…

will
I am not sure if this is the right thread but I have a question about my will. I am trying to update it and my present will gives security of tenure for my daughter, son in law and grandchildren to stay in our house, where they live, should I die. This stands until the youngest reaches 18 and they have always lived with me…

NI payments and retirement
Hope I'm in the most appropriate section :) My wife reaches her "revised" pension age in August. We've been told that she does not have to pay National Insurance from the start of the new tax year in April. If that is true (and it seems to good to be....) can someone point us to where we get whatever form she needs to get…

A new job - any ideas?
I just wondered what jobs anyone over 60ish has taken recently. I don't mean a continuation of your lifelong career but something different. I left my career at quite a senior management position after a life in local govt and the NHS a few years ago and since then have had a variety of jobs - currently in a shop, admin…

Elliotts Holiday timeshare
Hello, Im not sure if this is the right area to ask this but my parents have had a 1/52th timeshare in a villa (they own 1 week at year). They have to pay management fees each year. They have been told that the liability will pass to my sister and myself when they die. Is this legal? Thanks for any information Tim

Financial Protection in Early Dementia?
I have a seventy something relative who is in the process of being diagnosed with dementia (referred for hospital memory test). :( They presently live with their spouse (who is quite a bit older, has physical health problems, I *think* largely separate finances) in my relative's home. There is one adult child who is very…

Changes to care, fees and assets?
My gran has asked me to try and find out about the new changes that have been (or are being) made to paying for care, help with money and your assets. I've had a look on google but not managed to find anything. Does anyone know anything about it? Or have a link I can look at. thanks

Power of attorney
Some years back my parents just sprung on me out of the blue a "request" to sign a form agreeing to have power of attorney on them. They knew I was visiting with a friend (ie potential witness) and the form was sitting there and it was a case of "Here...sign here". They had never mentioned this to me previously. I would…
