Dying tidy
ok I am being very objective on this, no emotions just practicalities so that the people left behind know exactly what to do and where things are We made our wills today and dh kept mithering me in the car: what sort of funeral would you want, what hymns, where are the bank accounts etc etc. I have told him over and over…

more poa
I am in the process of trying to get POA for myself and dh. The prices vary so much. I have been quoted as much as £700 for the 2 of us. I have been told that it should be about £130 each. There is a site on-line WM power of attorney specialists. They charge £90 +vat per poa. Has anybody heard of these and are they…

tv license while my Mum is in respite care
My Mum went into respite care a week ago, for a period of weeks to months, I've only just thought about the tv license and that I might not be covered. I live in her house with her, and she gets the free oap's license so I'm normally covered by that, am I still? What about council tax?

Surrendering assets to save Care Home fees
My first post . Please help me understand. I see loads of inquires on here along the lines of the title of my post. My honest (not trolling) question is : Why would ANYONE give up their assets now in the hope of avoiding care home fees in the future? Local Council ("free") provison will be BASIC to say the least and the…

Care Home fees and savings - a slightly different query than usual
Hi, I'll keep this as brief and as clear as possible: 1) My FiL has moved to a care home just over a year ago (self funding). 2) His only child is my lovely wife and has financial PoA. She is the sole beneficiary in his will. 3) His house is sold and all assets are now in cash in a savings account. 4) His total assets have…

Health Checks ?
We're a couple in our mid 50's and over the past 6 months have seen TWO friends of the same age die (one 3 months after the diagnosis of cancer) and one literally felt a bit "off" one day, went to bed in the afternoon and died in his sleep. As you can imagine, this has come as a wake-up call for us. One option we're…

Deferred payments for care & estates
If someone has received care under a deferred payments scheme and has bequethed their house to child1 should the debt against the house also go to child 1 or should it be settled along with other debts before the residue is shared out among the other bequests?

Life Insurance
I'm 57 and my partner is 58. We have no life insurance so thoguht we should at least be covered for funeral costs. Any recommendations on these over 50 life covers? My partner has diabetes so we probably wouldn't get the "normal" life insurance

Tax refund now I've retired
I was paying tax on my (PAYE) income whilst working. Since retiring my income is currently too low for me to be liable for tax. Therefore I've paid out tax as normal for a large part of the 2012/13 tax year and presume it is still the case that we can expect a tax refund once that tax year has finished (ie at some point…

Granite Memorial Stone
I am not sure where to post this request. I need to purchase a dark grey granite grave stone and kerb memorial for my parents. Funeral directors hand out brochures and place the order with a company that actually make the memorial with a considerable mark up. There is no control over what I will actually receive until it…

My mother in law died several months ago and as she was caring for her husband we have had to move him into a care home. They had a tenants in common will and their house is now being sold to pay for care home fees. My Gran
Hi I apologise in advance as this post could turn into a long one... My Gran is 88 and still lives independently, my Dad lives nearby (my Mum died 3 years ago) as does one of my sisters; myself and my other two sisters live in the same county though about 20 miles away so don't get over as much as we would like. My Gran is…

conflicts in retirement
Just had a bizarre conversation with DH re the amount of time we are committed to things which leave us with little time together in retirement. He over-reacted by saying he will do absolutely nothing, then. So where do we go from here? He hates the thought of my telling him what he can or can't do ( agreed!), yet his…

winter fuel allowance
I keep getting told that I should put in my claim for this - because I am 60 now. I'd quite happily do so - since I am both retirement age and retired. However, I'd thought that it wasn't possible to get it these days until you reach your personal State Pension Age. I don't reach my own personal State Pension Age for about…

Care home fees, money running out.
Hi guys, this is my first post, so please be gentle with me! Oh, I hope I've posted in the right place also! My mother-in-law has been in a care home for the last 5 years due to her having a quite severe double stroke. When she first had the stroke my wife and I decided that we would sell our family home and also my…
