Away From The Madding Crowd
Hello and welcome to my little part of this wonderful MSE
community. For almost 10 years I have read
the contents of various forums seeking advice and inspiration regarding a
multitude of subjects. The help and
knowledge that I have gained cannot be underestimated and there are literally
too many people to thank…

The Senior Wonder Years!
I have decided to open my own thread in this section of the
forum. I am doing so to give myself an outlet to describe and reflect on my ’retirement’
as well as documenting how finances are hopefully supporting my ‘Wonder Years!’ I will still contribute to the ‘How Much To Live On’ thread
which has been part of my life for…

More WIRE than FIRE, simplifying, saving and savvy spending
HI :) I've been around the boards for years - I learn so much from other MSE-ers and find having a diary truly helps me keep track of what I'm doing £££-wise! However, I neglected my last diary and life has moved on since then, so it seems sensible to start over. My overall goal has been to retire early (FIRE - Financial…

Living it up by the sea
Thought I would start my own thread as I regularly read others on this site. Myself and my husband moved to Lincolnshire after he was forced to take retirement due to ill health 13 years ago. Started looking for a property with more land in a nice area and ended up here! Since moving to Lincolnshire, we have moved another…

How much to live on
How much do you expect you will require to live on each month when you are retired? ie no mortgage, no commute to work BUT maybe higher heating, hobby costs. I'm getting to the stage where I'm realising that I don't need to be super rich to retire and will only really require living costs but I don't know how much I should…

The value of things
Some time ago I created a post 'obsessed with saving' which created some interesting comments/discussion. Our situation is that we now have a healthy income/savings but I was more interested in saving than spending. Since the post I have changed a little and am prepared to see our capital reducing but the problem I still…

Reduced VAT rate of 5% for over 60s on energy saving measures
I have been unable to find any reference to this on any of the forum's boards so hope it is useful to folk. We were about to pay for internal insulation with VAT levied at 20% when a friend alerted us to the HMRC guidance which states that contractors can levy VAT at 5% for those who satisfy the social policy conditions,…

Age 60+ "Asda" cafe £1.00 meal deal
During Nov and Dec "Asda" cafe are offering for £1.00 a bowl of soup and roll, and unlimited hot drinks. All day, every day. (I don't think this is available in stores where the cafe is run as a concession, e.g. my local store has a McDonald's instead of a regular store cafe).

Motivation and Inspiration pre-retirement
Well, I'll be 60 in a couple of months, and my spreadsheets and projections say I should be able to retire at 62. Since I mentally set my self up to do this, I find I'm totally not motivated at work - I get my "hard" deadline projects done on time, but I just dawdle on others. I dread going to work, and the days drag - I…

Over 50? What’s one small money saving habit that’s made a real difference?
De lurk. First time post :) I’m turning 50 this year and focused on making my money go further. I’d love to hear from others in the same boat. What’s one money saving habit you’ve picked up after 50 that’s made a difference?

The Telegraph
I had to use my annual acting skills today. I had to telephone to cancel The Telegraph. It cannot be done online. The caller told me about all of the articles I had read, including those I had read today. Q. What do you like to read? A. I like business and politics, but I hate sport. Q. Do you want puzzles? A. No. Q. So…

Make do and mend
A few events this week have made me think about my approach and indeed society's approach to repairing or replacing things. Firstly, a student at my school broke their phone screen and was going to bin their phone until I suggested a screen replacement. Secondly, the storm saw a patio heater break, but the spare part is…

Blue Light Card
Just to let everyone know that those of us still in the teaching profession now have access to The Blue Light Card scheme. It is £4.99 for 2 years and having had a quick look at the offers once I'd signed up, I have to say it looks well worth the money. https://www.bluelightcard.co.uk

Insurance Renewal Time
The FCA might have banned dual pricing, but there can still be a loyalty penalty for renewing insurance policies. Pretty much every year, I have to waste time hunting out the best available deal on motor insurance (January/February) and household insurance (July/August). It's a pain in the neck, and I hate it. This year,…

Is High Taxation influencing your retirement date or plans?
I know I’m fortunate, but the income tax rates / bands and fiscal drag have actually pushed me to reduce days a week and abandon higher bonuses; as it’s simply not worth it. This will be compounded if pension tax relief is messed with. Example; Does anyone remember the senior Doctors & Consultants refusing additional hours…

Cutting back on Admin
I've always been quite meticulous about keeping financial records. Probably partly because of the job I've always done (Accounts work) but also because of my nature. I keep a book listing all the incomings and outgoings each month and another listing all the credit card transactions, These are then summarized and figures…
