Paying Road Tax Early
One of our vehicles is due to for renewal of road tax on 1st May. I understand that this can be paid two months in advance. To avoid the increases in April, I've considered paying this today (yup, I know it's just an additional £5) When attempting to do so online today (using the V5C), the DVLA website indicates that the…

VAT on road side charging - possibly dropping to 5% from 20%
Recent ruling in the tax First Tier Tribunal allows for VAT to be charged at 5%, the domestic rate, and not 20%. https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/tax/hmrc-policy/va... No doubt HMRC will want to appeal the ruling.

Switch from ICE to EV
At the moment I have an ICE car (petrol) and I expect it will be running for at least another 5 years. I also don't drive that much at the moment (mainly in and around town, and the occasional longer trip), about 5k miles per year. I know my next car will be an EV, but I find it difficult to pinpoint that moment in time…

Body work repairs
Hi I recently cleaned my car and I was shocked at so many scratches and rust. The two main ones were caused by other drivers on two occasions. Car is 14 years old. Does anyone know roughly what a body shop/garage would charge to repair these? I’ve done home/DIY body repairs previously but I no longer have the open space…

Car service reality check - Warranty cover
My car (kia, so 7 year warranty) is due its annual service. Because of health issues it has only been driven about 500 miles since last service. The car is entering it's last year under warranty cover and I am considering changing cars in the coming months. Dealer is quoting just shy of £300 for service to maintain…

Car insurance excess question.
I bumped into a parked car this morning on my way to work, I left a note and the owner called me and we exchanged details and I've notified my insurance. I'm a bit confused about the excess. My car didn't suffer any damage really, however the other car had some damage. Will I have to pay the excess once the owner claims on…

Car and Insurance for teen
My son, 17, has just passed his driving test. What is the cheapest way to get him on the road? He was insured to drive his Granny's car, but once he passed his test the cost shot up too much for her to afford it. Would we be best getting a car for me, that he could drive? What cars have lower premiums? We don't have a lot…

Mazda 2016 1.6 diesel issues
Hi. This is a long on complex issue. I purchased a 2016 1.6 Mazda Diesel in October 2023, it has a DPF light on when viewing the car but I was assured this was because it had stood idle for several months but I was assured it would be sorted before collection before if I went ahead with the purchase. This should have been…

Diesel car, worth considering?
My car has been written off (not really salvageable) and I am still waiting to hear from the insurer. I was looking at cars and spotted a diesel car (2016) at a good price and checking all of my boxes (i.e. cheap to run, low road tax, reasonable mileage), but I wonder if it is wise. For example, at the moment it is ulez…

Personal Lease Insurance
I have a new car ordered under a personal lease agreement with Kia. 2 issues seems to be causing me a headache for obtaining insurance: In the T&Cs it states… "You will also have to ensure we are named as owner and loss payee under the insurance policy"…Insurance comparision websites dont seem to draw out this point, even…

We are looking at replacing our existing car with either a full EV or possibly a hybrid model. The operation of a full EV is pretty easy to understand but I have a few questions about hybrids please. Car finance on PCP but no V5C in my name
I plan to purchase a new car on a PCP deal via a broker as offering better monthly payment deals and lower deposit than main dealer. A concern I have is that when it comes to the vehicle V5C the company who will be supplying the vehicle to me says they will retain the V5C in their name as registered keeper and owner and I…
