Lurking MFW finally posting: Mortgage free in 2025
Hi everyone, I have found this forum to be such a pillar of sense and strength since I started using it passively (learning from everyone else) in 2005. I grew up in a fairly frugal household, though have seen mortgages testing marriages, relationships, mental health and careers so often around me that I've wanted to be in…

Mind The Gap
Welcome. I've lurked around these forums for years and years - time to actually take some action. So who are we... Myself and OH bought our first flat 12 months ago - and we love it. In comparison to some (many) we have a modest mortgage so we have little excuse for not making OPs and improving our savings and pensions. We…

Colour in the bricks help..!
Hi, I’m a long time reader and member of mortgage free in 2025-30 thread. Feel like I’m starting to see the end in sight now that my mortgage is (finally) under £100k Mark...and 2025 feels doable. Can anyone help me with a motivational tool...I’ve seen on here people doing a picture with a house with x number of bricks and…

Can I be a MFW with loans and credit card debt?
Hi all, I am currently a DFW on the boards over there with a diary and everything. The reason it dawned on me this time last year that we were in a bit of a mess was the fact that we need to remortgage in the summer (2018) and I was in serious doubt that we would be given a mortgage. We have made a good start on the debts…

Up for a laugh? A 23 year old's guide on how (not) to be mortgage free
Hi folks! I'm a fervent reader of the MFW board, and have been meaning to get cracking on my own diary for some time to keep me on the MFW straight and narrow. Unfortunately, the time's never quite been right to do so before now; me and my partner are in a new build house which always seems to throw something up which we…

Time to get a mortgage and become a MFW
Hi there! I’m ready to make the leap and buy my first place. I haven’t really started looking yet, but am going to begin my search soon, with the hope of putting an offer on a place in the next few months. Until I’ve found a place, I’ll be using this thread to log my progress in saving as large a deposit as possible! Wish…

Is it better to make an overpayment lump sum at 2% or put that money into savings?
Hello all, If the mortgage rate is 2% at the moment is it better to make an overpayment, say of £20,000 or is it better to put that money in some kind of standard savings account (e.g. ISA)?

MF in 3 months, But Now Need To Make Decisions
I have always kept up with the MFW page. I'm now in a position at 34 years old I only have 3 months left on my mortgage. My wife and I alongside our 2 children under 5 have made sacrifices for the last 3 years. I have done thousands of hours of overtime but on average I have paid off an additional £2600 per month on my…

Dreaming Big
Hi all, Long time lurker here :D I’ve been reading MSE posts for a year now and have finally decided to start my own diary. Bit of background: my husband and I had over £30k worth of debt about 3 years ago. Some of it was fairly ‘sensible’ debt: renovation work on our flat, buying a car, etc. But most of it was frittered…

Hi all. Presently looking to move house after successfully paying off the mortgage on our current house and me and my wife starting a family so needing more space! Reduce to Increase...Towards the Forever Home...
I signed up to the 2018 mfw challenge last night on a whim so now it's time to try and start my own diary and start as I mean to go on. Once upon a time I had the notion of being mf by 40, then we had kids and that got delayed. Now I've decided that our current house, whilst lovely, is just not my forever home. Mortgage…

Mental health and mortgages 😢
I need help please..... I had a mental breakdown 6 years ago and have been on disability benefits all this time with the benefit paying the interest on my mortgage and I paid £25 a month off the capital borrowed. However, my mortgage comes to an end April 2018 and I cannot afford to pay of the outstanding balance. I do not…

My Family and Me's diary to mortgage freedom
Okay, so we have a bigger mortgage than any I’ve seen while I’ve been lurking here but although this will be a long journey to freedom, I have big dreams and they’ve got to start somewhere! At the moment we are fixed into our mortgage at a rate of 3.69% which is really high and we can’t get out of it without paying a hefty…

7 Year MF Plan
With another year around the corner, and the current one disappearing barely noticed, I thought it about time to start to start being serious about being mortgage free. Currently I’m at £97,700 of a £112,500 mortgage, 21 years remaining @2.24% I’ve made a few overpayments so far, which have mostly been focusing at hitting…
