Domestic RHI eligibility
We have just moved into a farmhouse with a separate apartment conversion above an adjacent barn. The house and apartment are attached but are separate dwellings, i.e., you have to go outside to go from one to the other, and the apartment is entirely self-contained, with its own kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and living room.…

Moving into a home with LPG tank nightmare - suggestions?
Hi all, Will move shortly into a property served by a private underground LPG tank. I am due to move next week and the vendors have informed that the gas is running low (10-ish%) and advised to try and sort this asap to avoid running out of gas after completion. The problem is that due to the tank location only Calor (who…

Aim: To install greenest and cheapest heating system
I'm having some building work done on my 3 bed house later this year. I can use this opportunity to replace my Potterton gas CH boiler which is over 15 years old - even though it works it probably isn't energy efficient. I haven't been able to find the Gov grant of £5000 for air source heat pumps which was mentioned last…

Selecting a woodburner
We've an open fire which we use a few times a week; I've decided to get a stove fitted so that we get more out of the logs and to stop a howling gale that comes though the living room door and up the chimney. I'm generally quite skeptical and suspect that it's basically a metal box with fire inside, so there can't be much…

Confused about Stove air intake requirements/instalation
I am looking at getting a stove and wanted to get a 5Kw one so that I did not need the added complication of having air vents installed (1970's house). I am busy choosing a stove, and one that I like states it is an air-tight stove, compatible with low consumption houses and that it is compatible with RT2012 standards…

Optimumtemperature settings for Gas boiler
Hi, I had a WB Greenstar 30i installed last spring which the installer set the CH temp at 74 and the Hot water at 55. This is a 3 bed semi. I found there is an adjustment on the boiler settings that allows it to set its ideal temps. Using this it set the CH to 61 and HW to 50. Is the an actual recommended temp for optimum…

LPG running cost
Hello, I have a Greenstar 36CDi Compact ErP LPG boiler, and with Calor Gas (39.9p per litre). From looking online it says it has an output of 36 kW, so trying to work out the running cost. 1 Litre of LPG = 7.08 kWh So if I run the central heating for 8 hours (4 hours morning + evening), it would need 36 kW x 8 hours = 288…

Boiler replacement grants
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows if there are boiler grants available to replace an oil heating system. There is no gas supply as the house is not near a main line, but all I can see on line is to replace gas boilers. Also there are so many websites I don't know if they are genuine, don't want to put details in and get…

Oil boiler in new build, do I have to have solar panels for an EPC
We planned our new house with solar panels on the garage roof. We changed our minds about the solar panels but now we are told that we have to have them to get an EPC rating as we have an oil fired boiler. The house has been built to the highest standard of efficiency in all other ways. Are we forced to have these panels?

Switch Oil to LPG?
Hi All I appreciate there are lots of threads talking about this but most seem quite old now, but apologies if I have missed a more current one. I recently moved into a house and have oil for the first time. It does seem to be expensive and the price fluctuates enormously, especially in the winter. I am therefore exploring…
