Should I bother with a battery?
I have a 6kw system, fitted in 2919, and am thinking about whether to add a battery to it given the rising cost of electric. In 2021 I generated 3473 units from the panels and imported 4090kw from the grid. My FITS payments are 3.92p per unit generation and 5.57p for exports. I’m with Ecotricity for my electricity and am…

Solar Panel Advice
Hello, I am buying a new build property (detached 4 bed, not built yet), due to move in back end of this year (2022). Luckily it is with a small builder who is happy for me to request any changes/additions throughout the build. It will be fitted with an air source heat pump as standard (underfloor heating for the whole…

Solar Panel Company dissolved
Few years back I went up getting free solar panels. In the sense of I using whatever they producing at the minute and anything else that I don’t use goes back to grid and company take all profits in from feed in tarrif. However I just realise that company who have installed those panels have dissolved based on information…

Electricity costs going up but why is SEG staying so low?
Perhaps the simple answer to this question is 'greed' on behalf of the energy companies but given the massive growth in electricity prices driven by underlying gas costs, why isn't the SEG rate for domestic production going up? Surely buying at a (maximum) of 5p/kWh and being able to 'sell' on at the wholesale price is…

Givenergy vs Huawei
I was due to have a solar installation in a few weeks with an 8.2kwh Givenergy battery. Just been notified that there are shipping delays and have been offered the choice of waiting another 4-6 weeks or having a Huawei 10kwh battery and Huawei hybrid inverter for an additional £1k. Does anyone have experience of the Huawei…

Air to air versus air to water heat pumps
Do air to air heat pumps produce as much heat as air to water and does the same efficiency apply ? Also, does the currently available funding apply to both or just air to water systems ?

Shouldn't we be considering ethics as well as environment and money saving?
I welcome MSE's email explaining what happens now that my carefully chosen Pure Planet energy account has been taken over by Shell... a company with an apalling environmental and human rights record (see for example https://www.fairplanet.org/dossier/eco-crimes-shell-and-the-niger-delta/). Needless to say, I'll be…

Views on battery quote please
I had panels installed a few years ago with the Norfolk 'Solar Together' initiative. I have a 4kW system that generates around 4300 kWh per annum. I have been very happy with the setup and it has paid for itself already. I am interested in trying to reduce my energy costs further (and try to be greener) and have signed up…

Replacing an oil boiler with biomass
Hi all I've just bought a barn conversion that is not on mains gas and currently has an oil boiler. We're looking at green options and sadly we can't get a ground source heat pump as we don't have 3 phase power. So the next option we're considering is a biomass boiler. While I'm not entirely convinced it's the best (given…

FiT if provider goes bust?
My FiT provider is Bulb. They are due a reading at the end of this month and every previous quarter they have sent a friendly "Hello from Bulb" email about half way through the month to remind me to submit a reading. But not this time, so far. This, coupled with reports of Bulb being in financial difficulty, has left me…

Solar Panel Ownership
Hi Help needed! I bought my property in 2018 with solar panels, I wrongly assumed that ownership would transfer to me once the sale completed. 3 years on the vendor is now stating they still own the panels and I should provide them with meter readings. It was never mentioned by my solicitors when I was going through the…

The case for Octopus Agile (with solar panels)
At the beginning of the month I decided to switch to Octopus Agile. Previously I was reckoning that it was only worthwhile with a battery so you could take advantage of cheap times for import and expensive times for export. However 2021 is a very different summer to 2020. All the times are expensive for import. The daily…

Octopus Energy & FIT payments
I seem to have run in to a spot of bother with my present FIT 'agent', Octopus Energy. It seems to me that energy suppliers don't really like the hassle of having to handle FIT payments, something that doesn't earn them much revenue I suspect. So you don't get 'great service' from them if all they do is process FIT…

Best export only tariff?
I emailed my current energy provider Utility Point and they laughably only offer 0.0001p/kwh I have seen OVO offer 4p/kwh, this isn't as high as bulb or Octopus but you don't need to import from them to get that rate. Is this the best option as my fixed rate is 13.5p on utility point until Feb next year!

Export tariffs - FIT, SEG, Octopus Outgoing Agile
I was a Green Network Energy (GNE) customer and have just emerged from the transfer to EDF as Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR).
