using plants as room fresheners?
Hoping someone might know something that can help me….. First off I have a rosemary bush that is sprawling across the drive. It's huge but laying down on the job and sets off the car's "warning you're going to hit something" sensors. It needs a severe haircut. And of course I know it can be used in cooking but I see no…

Estimating shading?
Hello, I recently moved to a new property and have been considering getting solar + battery installed before the 0% VAT rate expires. I've sought some quotes from national and local companies and right now I have a £12.7k quote for a 7.1kW system on 3 strings with a Tesla PW3, bird proofing, G99 etc. On the quote, they are…

Octopus IOG - Fixing?
The email I've been waiting (dreading?) has now arrived from Octopus. My day time electricity rate is going up by over 20%. But they've offered a one year fix at the new rate for a year. It appears that predictions are that prices are going to continue to go up in the new year so it may be worth doing. Anyone got any…

Relatively low electric usage - solar worth it?
My annual usage is 2200 kwh at just over 25.1p per kwh, the cost is £552.50 a year. Been quoted £7900. The quote indicates we can generate 4500kwh a year. As the quote is via my energy supplier I would sell back at 20p per kwh. In theory if that rate stayed the same it would take just under 8 years to pay back, ignoring…

Got PV and Battery but no EV yet?
I was just coming up to renewal time and finding that all large suppliers (I don't want to with a supplier at any risk of going under mid-fix) now need evidence of EV ownership (or at least the right to see evidence) to access tariffs with low overnight import rates. Except…EDF Pod Point Plug and Power. Half price Pod…

Help with calculating best Octopus tariff option, adding EV charger to solar/battery setup?
Hi all, I'm getting myself confused so would welcome some direct advice, or suggestions on where to go for it We have a Growatt system, which is not ‘intelligent’. I can manually set it for timings (eg push export out during peak evening period). I am about to purchase an electric car, and install an EV charger. I am most…

Solar + Battery Installer Suggestions
I'm just about to start looking at getting quotes for a solar + battery system and was wondering if anyone had suggestions for good installers that cover the South Yorkshire area? Some other potentially useful information: Current yearly consumption is ~3500kWh, but is expected to rise slightly next year with additional…

DNO export capacity
Hi, Whilst I wait for my DNO application to come back, I just wondered what other PW3 owners have managed to get approved? I realise that this is very much dependant on local grid constraints but thought it would be interesting. My installer has applied for 11kW. I'm hoping for 7kW approval.

Adding solar to PW3
Signed up to have a PW3 installed shortly in double garage. Really good deal with local installer. Currently no solar but want small solar array on the south side of garage roof at some point as house roof is annoyingly badly laid out. One side of garage roof could fit maybe 4-6 panels I thought. PW3 installer wants circa…

Best way to insulate 70+mm of hollow cavity wall?
Greetings, The properties on our estate were built in the early 90's and so we (incorrectly) presumed that we have some sort of insulation within our 70+mm wall cavity. As the image below highlights, this is not the case. Our NE facing wall is, by far, the coldest - we can feel a draft coming through parts of the wall on…

Budget friendly PV + battery options - with or without Tesla P3.
Hi all, I'm looking for some advice particularly around whether it is worth stretching my budget for a Tesla Powerwall 3. I've had a couple of quotes (going to get more) and have been doing a lot of research, but for the next stage of quotes I want to to try and be more specific rather than open ended. I'm in Norfolk and…

EDF Fit Payment delay this quarter ? ( Submitted 01/09/26 )
Hi All, EDF have been and are usually really good with their turnaround of FIT readings into payments into the bank. This current payment seems to be slower though ….. and before someone starts. I know it’s only a week, I know that they say it can take up to 90 days etc. They usually pay extremely quickly and it shows as…

Not pluggin solar.
I have been considering a PnP solar system I'm not super worried about pack back time, possibly a bit of a vanity project for myself or trying to dip my toe into solar. Obviously, payback would be good, but not my main drive. I'm disappointed that PnP solar does not accommodated batteries! I was considering an EcoFlow…

PV System Comparison
Sorry if this has been done before, but I thought it would be useful to have a simple comparison of people’s systems and their typical yearly figures. My system 2 × 400 ESE 4 × 400 W WNW Solis S5 2.5kw inverter Installed August 2022 My average yearly figures Generation: ~1,700 kWh Export: ~1,160 kWh Import: ~2,070 kWh…

Significant changes to permitted development planning rules
On 27/8/2026, the permitted development right permitting the installation of solar equipment on a house, block of flats or building within the curtilage was updated. A couple that stood out: In the case of plug-in solar, any part of the solar equipment should not be installed on a wooden wall, balcony or enclosure, or any…

Free Electricity for 2 years!
Being absolutely sick of the up and down energy market I decided to take action. Using all the fantastic tools and advice give by Martin I set off in search of an answer. Having an East to West facing roof I though I couldn't have solar panels, but I can!! I got a quote for 12 panels, 6kW inverter and a 10kWh battery for…

Where do I start with solar panels and a battery install?
Am going to install solar panels and battery storage within the next 6-12 months. I know virtually nothing about it. Where do i start to look about this? Current situation is a large detached house, on the east of Scotland ( near Edinburgh) but only 2 adults, me and OH. House is 3 storeys, built around 25 years ago, with a…

Train travelcards and ticketing sites ('discount' deleted)
This may be useful to know for the ethnical consumer. A colleague last year mentioned various travel websites they use to buy cheaper train tickets. When I looked into them I found almost all are owned by Chinese entities and/or with HQs based in China/HK
