Landscaping soil for garden.
Hi, Question is in bold if you want to skip over my story/situation. Thanks.. Story/Situation: I have just bought a new build home with a garden that is approx 14m x 6.4m. 60% of it is a ditch. The ditch is just soil, mainly clay based, no weeds, flowers, or grass. The rest of the garden, the other 40%, is a flat strip of…

Will my privet cuttings make it?
Hi all, I've tried to propagate some privet cuttings as a little project to replace a bit of dead hedge. I used milk containers gave the cuttings about 6-8 weeks in a closed environment. I'm left with the following, I reckon there are maybe 5 thriving cuttings, 5 maybes and 3 no hopers. Ive been giving them limited…

Recommend Me Some Long Handled Edging Shears
Can somebody recommend me some long handled edging shears. My elderly parents bought some to replace their shears from the 60's and these replacements were next to useless. Since the loss of my dad I have been doing their garden and bought some Spear & Jackson, (£59.99) which also turned out to be rubbish. After first use…

Increasing value of a house by improving the garden
Hi, I have moved into a new build house recently. The garden is currently 60% ditch and 40% flat grass. It is approx 10 metres long by 5 metres wide. You step onto the grassed area and look down into a steeply sloped ditch which is 6 feet deep and is basically just soil. No bushes, weeds, grass etc, just soil. The ditch…

New lawnmower problems
I mowed through the cable of my lawnmower recently so I had to buy a new one. I was initially going to buy another Flymo one but after reading reviews, I decided to buy a Spear&Jackson one because everyone was saying how light it was and easy to push. It’s not! I can barely push it and it’s exhausting. Mowing the lawn now…

Climbers on fence
hello We have a couple of climbers that I want to plant (two honeysuckles and a jasmine). We want them to climb the fence dividing the back garden from our neighbours. They have a slightly raised garden and they own the fence. It's way too low (1.5m probably or less), and we need privacy. Its south facing so they don't…

Can I sow out of season seeds now?
I want an Oregano plant but I can't find one, however I do have some seeds. Whilst it's not the season for sowing them according to the packet, if I could germinate and grow the seedlings up inside, would it be feasible or am I wasting my time?

Ants!
Hi all, after some advice about an ant problem We've got a tree in our garden which is covered in ants - I'm talking hundreds of them running up and down it. When the kids toys brush past they'll instantly be covered in them. They've now also started coming into the house in 2 different places. What's the best way to deal…

Management of a watercourse (drainage ditch)
We have moved and inherited a watercourse aka a drainage
ditch. It’s 70-80m long and our boundary
is at/slightly beyond its far bank. It’s a slope of about 10%. Apparently in times of heavy rain water does
flow but I think mostly it’s dry. It’s
been neglected and is populated with mostly ivy, brambles and nettles as…

Concrete garden challenge - ideas please
Hello all. I'm probably going to be moving in late August/Early Sept and the house has a concrete garden. It isn't all one piece, it was originally part of a farmyard so is patched with concrete, tarmac, gravel stuff (loose stones) and presumably whatever else the farmer could lay his hands on for the cows to walk on. The…

Plant identification devices?
I've seen several phone app's which say they can identify any plant by scanning it. I'm interested as I have a few roses and other plants that I would like to identify. Do any members have any experience of these apps or have one? Thanks for all replies.
