Can You Sell Wood From a Fallen Tree in your own Garden?
Storm Bert: Silver birch landed in my garden! It's Council owned (well on verge of public road & outside my property) with a TPO. I've reported to Council highways response expected in 2 weeks! Fortunately no damage to building and garden/ fence damage not covered by insurance. I'm thinking Council not likely to pay for…

SammyKayes Allotment Adventures!
Well after being on the waiting list for nearly 15 years, last week I was finally granted an allotment. Its a tidy size as you can see from the picture and this is actually a half plot in our small allotment area. I managed to somehow snag a prime location - next door to the toilet and the little allotment tea room space,…

Electric "pole" hedge lopper/trimmer that isn't expensive / rubbish or both
Looking for actual feedback on electric or otherwise lightweight pole trimmers that can do a general hedge tidy on rough hawthorn/beech/bramble hedges I need a decent amount of reach for height and slope. So a pole type not a tool directly in your hand. Battery one end. Pole. Cutter(s) the other. I have seen a middling…

Oxalis versicolor - Candy Cane Sorrel - anyone else tried this?
I bought 5 diminutive corms/bulbs from a Dutch supplier a month or so ago and they've all sprouted in the 3" pot I've set them in - which is great. What isn't great is that they're shooting up in a very spindly way on my windowsill and are touching on a foot tall now, the stems being as thin as matchsticks. They're…

Potato Harvest Issues - What Went Wrong?
I planted potatoes in May and harvested them on September 1st, but I’ve run into some problems. All the larger potatoes have holes, possibly from worms or pests getting inside, and there are also a lot of small, tiny potatoes. I’m not sure where things went wrong—did I plant them too early or harvest too late? Any advice…

What’s Wrong with These Apple Trees?
Hi all, I’ve inherited these two apple trees, but something seems off about how they’re growing. This year, they’ve produced way more fruit than leaves, and the branches are so heavy with apples that the fruit is touching the ground. I’m worried that they may have been pruned incorrectly in the past. Could that be the…

I have a small irrigation set up in my garden for the veg patch and bamboo (that I have in pots). A potential new, much longer garden may come into reach for me. Does anyone have any good ideas about irrigation and how to get water to the back of the garden with good pressure or any other ideas for irrigation? I saw a nice…

I was about to blame the local cats (digestive problems): but it's Nostoc Algae!
Afternoon everyone. After 2 days of torrential rain, I have a long row of this algae on the other side of my boundary wall. It is Council Land and very compacted clay, devoid of any grass. A few weeds grow there. I was inwardly swearing at the local cats, but then I thought..... hang on, the cats cannot produce such a lot…

Oil stain on driveway
Someone came in my drive with a car and left an oil stain. I noticed 24 hours later so I used lots of wash up liquid and laundry and a hard brush. Spent about 30 mins will this lift it? I am waiting for it to dry but will that do and will it weather in or with some rain now I put that down?

Plants for gravel area
I have a gravel area that is planted with various Verbenas and Echinops. Garden path suggestions
Hello, advice please! I’m having a path in my garden and need advice on suitable materials. I’m elderly, with severe arthritis so walk with a stick or a wheeled rollator. I have very little confidence walking outside in case I trip or stumble and fall. I need a path that’s completely steady, even, with no uneven bits that…

Removing old metpost spikes
Is it possible to remove old metpost spikes from soil - specifically clay soil - after the posts have rotted out? I have several such which I put in in my garden thirty-odd years ago. I’d like to take the opportunity to change the garden lay-out, and these old metal sockets are now a trip hazard. I’m thinking perhaps…

Lawn help
Hi all, first time post on this board. For the first time in my life I have a relatively nice garden. However the previous owners had dogs and I think that is what has caused some of the patches that can be seen. I also tried to cut the grass on too short a setting and it cut things up. I’ll put it on 40mm only from now.…
