Deflation, deflation, deflation
CPI at -0.1%, first time since 1964. Many things are actually getting cheaper, rather than just decreasing in the rate at which they get more expensive. This is of course a temporary thing, and the BOE are right to look through it as they did when inflation was temporarily above target. However I'm sure the usual suspects…

A little time bomb under UK buy-to-let housing - Maybe
https://medium.com/bull-market/the-overall-benefit-cap-a-little-time-bomb-under-uk-buy-to-let-housing-9575030792d3 A very interesting piece. Basically the argument goes, under the benefits cap, out of work payments and child payments are fixed so the only thing that can be cut is housing benefit. The author goes through…

A seven day economy
Listening to the proposals for the seven day NHS and finding my self nodding (despite missing Sunday closing) I feel the cat is out of the bag for community days of with Sunday closing hours and with economically active weekends in many spheres maybe we should extend this to all areas of the economy? Instead of expecting…

UK property owning families increased wealth by 20% last year - don't make me laugh!
This was a survey done by Lloyds Bank Private Banking, and it somehow managed to come up with this statistic. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/shopping-and-consumer-news/11606709/Families-20-per-cent-richer-than-last-year.html For the benefit of MSE forum readers I've translated it into a financially-literate form of…

Surrounded by "Big spenders"
Sometimes I feel surrounded by people who live faux celebrity lifestyles all funded by interest only mortgages, balloon payment cars and credit cards. We don't spend much as a family, we have quite modest tastes, buy food in Aldi, drive a 7 year old car and try to save a proportion of our wages. We come from a…

Is it time to ditch our obsession with austerity and deficit?
This theme has been developed and disseminated as a part of neo-liberal economic elite, first by new Labour, then the Lib Dems and the Tories, but particularly in the UK, assisted of course by a near universally supportive and biased press. The purpose was keep the caps on real wage rises and retain exceptionally low…

Do you hold net positive or negative assets?
I was amazed that the majority of the UK population (66 per cent) hold no positive financial assets at all – with the combined £9trn held privately in the UK spread between the remaining 34 per cent. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/analysis-of-britains-9-trillion-of-wealth-reveals-a-deeply-divided-nation-10251573.html…

Whoops - BOE downgrades forecast and backs up labours concerns
So now we have Mark Carney himself stating that the new jobs in the economy are disproportinately lower skilled and less productive. They have cut the growth forecast from 2.9% to 2.5%. Wage growth was also downgraded from 3.5% to 2.5%. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32720772

1 in 4 MP's in Parliament is a landlord
This is an interesting article - I know its the Mirror (and old) but in my defence I arrived here via the BBC! http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/ampp3d/housing-crisis-more-landlords-parliament-5044990 With so many Landlords 'in power', with their own interests obviously in mind, can housing ever be truly reformed or changed?

Effects of the European Referendum & (yet another) Scot Exit on the UK Economy
Regardless of whether you are going to vote yes or no - what do you think will happen to the UK economy in the lead up to the referendum? Any thoughts on another Scottish referendum vote? It would be great if you could link to any good articles you come across.

The Effects of Conservative Cuts 2015-2020
Regardless of whether you are pro or anti the cuts what do you think their effects will be in the UK economy? They are to be about £33 billion after 2015-2016, the bulk of which will be in the first 2 years because of the election cycle. It would be great if you could link to any good articles you come across.

London prices rising less than non-London prices.
London house prices could be facing some heavy weather M.W..... We wrote here late last year that it was time for the prices of London houses and non-London houses to start to converge. Look at a chart of the way they move, and you will see that, while London prices are always higher, the gap between them reverts to a…

a friend just paid off his mortgage
Was around at a friends house today and he has just made final balance on his mortgage. He sat in a chair and was giggling uncontrollably for about 15 mins. I asked if he was ok and he said he was relived to be mortgage free and it was a release for him. I am yet to pay mine off - just wondering when people make that final…

Who should be the next leader?
Of Labour, the Lib Dems and UKIP? I wanted to ask this question, but didn't want to threadjack Gen's thread about why the Tories won. I agree with chewy re Chuka Umunna, I don't think he's the right person for the job. Andy Burnham is better, but he hasn't had a career outside of politics. I'd personally prefer Alan…
