If the Labour Party didn't exist, would anyone today invent it?
AFAICT all Labour is for now is to provide a pretext for envy, by making out that resenting someone else's harder work and greater success is a respectable moral position, rather than a shameful personality flaw. But to put it another way, what does anyone want done that they need the Labour Party to exist to get done?

Here's why I don't think immigration will fall following Brexit
The government want to get immigration down to 100,000 a year I think that target is way off the mark and people who voted Brexit to curb immigration are in for a huge shock. Ending June 16 net migration was 325,000 all in. 189,000 are from the EU 196,000 are from outside the EU (whom we have control over don't forget)…

Sovereign wealth funds could replace tax
If government (s) were able to put a sufficient amount into a sufficiently aggressive sovereign wealth fund they could solve their deficits and even reduce or eventually eliminate tax. Government wouldn't be running these companies and could have income from abroad. It would reduce market opportunities for individuals…

Does anyone talk about house prices in here anymore?
... or is this place now to bore others with pet projects your family can't stomach hearing you bang on about ? On a side note apparently Wood Green might be getting a 3.5 billion investment. https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.standard.co.uk/news/london/35bn-scheme-for-7500-homes-in-wood-green-a3471106.html%3Famp X

How do any single buyers manage to afford houses when only able to borrow 4x income??
This is something that severely intrigues and concerns me, how do people actually manage to afford to buy even just 2-bedroom flats/houses, when you can only borrow 4x income for a mortgage? And im not talking minimum wage - sub 20k salary people, nor am I meaning the absurd London property market, instead I mean just…

Are UKIP finished?
If the party's leader can't beat a Labour candidate who called Brexit "a steaming pile of 5h it" in a seat which was the capital of Brexit, where can they win?

Not sure what there is to discuss really... but !!!!!! is going on? Almost ten years on from Lehmann's and no profit. Multi-billions in losses. Little prospect of it being returned to private ownership for years to come. I was broadly supportive of the bailouts at the time, but I think it will go down in history as a huge…

Is Saving Stream really safe?
Hi im putting this post on this part of the forum as its more of a debate. I went through the details of SS in terms of accounting and company risks. I think the general consensus between people on this forum and elsewhere is that its relatively safe platform although of course there is borrower risk (which can be…

Brexiters are the true progressives now
The progressives are the people in places like Stoke. It is they who are open-minded and politically brave and trusting in democracy, so much so that they defied all expert diktats and in their thousands put an X against Brussels and for popular sovereignty in the EU referendum last year. It’s Labour’s metropolitan…

"Housing Market Slumps"
I'm surprised no one has picked up on this today. It's been all over the BBC news this morning as well. Headlined in The Times. Any comments? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/housing-market-slump-ten-months-for-sale-brexit-house-prices-a7587076.html

Fair trade
Not something that is often discussed here so thought I'd start a thread. I just watched the excellent documentary Black Gold, about Ethiopian coffee producers. It is currently free on Amazon Prime and well worth a watch. The coffee produced in the movie is widely regarded as among the finest in the world. Companies like…

JRF say only top 20% of earners can acheive a minimum acceptable standard of living
I feel this thread needs a face palm smiley. It sems the esteemed Joseph Roundtree Foundation went out ansd asked people what they though a 'minimum acceptable standard of living' consisted of. Plugging inot their calculator my household (2 adults, 3 kids) requires the single earner to be on £61,000 pa to acheive this…

The finances of an Independent Scotland.
As we all know Scotland has a significant budget deficit problem that is currently an impediment to independence. The purpose of this thread is to discuss in broad terms what that deficit looks like and what potential solutions may exist - and also to look at the currency options for an indy Scotland. The deficit.…

Sale and Rent Back
Hi, Last year we had put our house on the market (detached bungalow, Torbay/Devon, 2 bedrooms, open plan with sea view and large new conservatory) to release equity for funding our business. Originally we intended selling the house and moving somewhere else, but since we couldn't find a suitable and affordable alternative…

Charlie Mullins of Pimilico Plumbers
As most people know, Charlie Mullins is an outspoken Remainer & bankrolled the successful legal bid to give Parliament Brexit vote. So I was somewhat surprised to read today of his less successful legal exploits regarding the poor chumps he employs:…
