Arranging Two Separate Funerals Under Contention
I have a half-brother who I no longer speak with. We share a mother, neither of us have fathers in our lives. Our mother is (separately) involved heavily in our lives, including with our respective children. Our mother is still alive, but I am asking this question about her funeral(s) should I need to be prepared. Given…

Can a UK citizen opt out of US witholding tax on Inheritance payment?
We have been left some money by a US relative who has sadly died. The US forms all ask us if we want US Federal and State tax witheld at source or not. Then warn about fines if we answer wrongly. We have been unable to find out what the rule is, as we are UK citizens. Anyone know, or know how we can find out? (We provide…

Administrator duties - intestacy - minors inheritance
Hi. I am Administrator for my uncle's Estate. He died intestate. Myself, cousin 1 and the two sons of cousin 2 (sadly deceased) are the beneficiaries of the Estate. The two sons of cousin 2 are 15 and 17 yrs old. This is making the distribution of their shares of the Estate complicated and is delaying the whole Estate from…

Mum has died. We have differing advice from each bank/company etc. Any help appreciated please.
Hi all My wife's Mum died in the last couple of months (without leaving a will) and we are faced with a mountain of paperwork to sift through now. The credit card ones were easy to cancel because they were all nil owing. We have rang a few banks, policies and organisations and have had very different responses. I would be…

Made a will or Thinking of making a will
I was oblivious to the important factors when we die, having made a will and leave an inheritance until I became a sole beneficiary. My sister had made me a co executor along with a solicitor to say this experience has been stressful is an understatement he has (sorry if this rude) milked the estate for every penny,…

Tax on Interest
Hi - I'd be grateful for your help. I was Executor of my Dad's estate & his savings were in various NS&I products. Since the value was over £85k I set up a Direct Saver with them to transfer the funds as they were released. I referred to it as the Executor Account throughout the process but it was in my name. The account…

Should I cover myself with Gazette notice?
Hi all, I'm the executor of my father's estate that has difficult beneficiaries (I am one of the beneficiaries too). They have questioned why I never placed a notice in the Gazette for any creditors to get in touch. I've never been an executor before and never knew about the Gazette so it's my fault. I'm 99% confident…

What is the expected etiquette for after a funeral?
We are expecting only a few people for a funeral we are organising (15, maybe 20 at a push) and are wondering what the etiquette is for afterwards? We can either have people back to their house for some tea and sandwiches, but this feels a little intrusive to be honest. Also the house doesn't really have the…

Will Advice
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I'm just after a bit of advice about setting up Wills. I have a free Will service benefit through my employer and had a couple of meetings with the solicitor but at the end it felt like a sales pitch trying to get us to pay for extras like setting up individual trusts…

Legacies received by executors taxable ?
Normally legacies are not taxable in the hands of the recipient. However, if the will gives legacies to the executors on the condition that they must act as executors would this make the money received taxable? The executors are in effect being paid for work done. Any comments appreciated.

Stepdad has remarried advise about family home
Hi, I wanted some advice. My stepdad married my mother nearly 30 years before she died last year. He was left with our family home after she passed away. He always advised my sister and I that he had made a will and left us as sole heirs as he didn't have any children of his own and hasn't spoken to any of his own family…

Funeral Plans are a Con = Ecclesiastical and others
My aunt took out a funeral plan in 2009 with Anderson McGuire Funeral Directors Glasgow, the Funeral plan they had was from a company called Ecclesiastical Cost £2300, at the time it would have seemed the right thing to do in the glossy Brochure, thinking no matter what, all is covered even inflation years later, fixed fee…

can executor and beneficiary be absent for weeks/months after someone's death?
To make situation clearer - my daughter was planning to go to another part of the world far from civilisation the next month for a few months. I can certainly see the possibility of me dying but we do not know when (steady quick deterioration, gaining speed in the last few months ). It would not be nice for her to wait for…

Inheritance or gift - advice required.
Hi, my Uncle sadly passed away 15 months ago. With no will left his brothers have gone through the probate process and I'm led to believe my Mom (his remaining sister) will receive somewhere in the region of £60,000.00. My Mom still has a mortgage to pay off amongst other things but wants me to have a substantial sum, I…
