DIY Estate Handling - My Recent Experience (England)
Not sure how helpful this will be or whether it belongs somewhere else, but if it helps even one person, it’s worth sharing. I sadly lost my mum earlier this year. The estate was fairly simple - a house, a few bank accounts, local government pension, routine household possessions, and no debts (including no mortgage). I…

It's done! Thank you!!!
Hello. It seems that my task as Will Executor has now come to an end—well, sort of. When the solicitors informed me that the admin of the estate was concluded, I cried! It's been quite a journey and not pleasant at all. It feels as if I've been to Hell and back! I'm still incredulous and keep thinking that there might be…

"Thank you" to contributors
A big "shout out" to all those who have taken the time to answer the multitude of questions posted here.I've been reading the various comments and explanations - they have helped me understand and DIY Probate (admittedly not a complicated will/estate), and also plan what my wife and I ought to ask for when getting our own…

PoA on death - what I've learned
Dealing with my late mother's estate as executor I discovered a couple of things I wasn't aware of before in respect of the PoA's that I held to act on her behalf. First, the government's 'Tell Us Once' service does not include the Office of the Public Guardian - you have to notify them separately. Secondly, when you do…

Any Success stories? Everything finally sorted after family "go rogue"
Prompted by the many threads we see regarding the mishandling of estates, where individuals "go rogue" and don't handle the estate assets as they should ( in some cases out and out theft), I can't recall any threads whereby the aggrieved parties finally got everything sorted out as it should've been and recovered any legal…

Lady_K
Some of you may have known my mum on here, her username was Lady_K. A while ago she posted a thread asking about no frills body disposal. Sadly we lost mum on 8th Jan 2021 after she suffered a catastrophic stroke 😭 After her passing I had absolutely no idea of her wishes about funerals as she never let me know, I think it…

Hi. Newbie here. I've been following your probate messages for many months now, while nursing a very sick parent. I'm am alone in this process as my only sibling has been estranged for 27 years. Their decision, and not even advancing years (97) and the ill health of our remaining parent prompted a response. So I am the…

DIY Power of Attorney
I have recently arranged a POA (finance) for my brother-in-law who has mild dementia. Everyone was worried in case his wife died first and so I looked up online. Anyway it costs £82 and is not in the least bit difficult. You need the person themselves, the person who will be responsible (you can have more that one), a…

Probably shouldn't laugh... but...
Mother in Law left a probably insolvent estate, so we're not administering. As none of the different parts of the council talk to each other, I've so far sent about three different emails saying "no-one is administering". We got a different department writing to us today to say that she might owe some money for in home…

WE HAVE PROBATE
Original thread below - around 24 weeks to get probate........... I'm not sure what I was expecting, but a grey envelope with mud on it squished through the letter box wasn't it. My experience of DIY Probate
Hi I thought I'd share my experience of applying for probate online for anybody in any doubt about doing it themselves. If you've a simple probate then I can see no reason why you would pay an expert to do it for you, so give it a go. This is the first probate I've ever been involved in. I had already created the probate…

Deceased Person's Investments
LOST PAYMENTS! My mother died in October 2022. She had fairly substantial holdings with large UK investment companies from which she received regular monthly dividend payments as her income. The investment companies were notified of her death and sent a death certificate within two weeks. This was also done at my mother's…
