One for the Electricians...
Hi Just after some views from electricians as to what, if any, laws the image below has broken. The image shows a projection wall beam mount (a pole from the wall with a projector on it) and the electricians have come in afterwards and mounted that socket where it is along with the trunking going over the actual wall mount…

Electricity Surges or Coincidence? Anybody handy with electrics please advise!
We've had two failures of heat-based appliances in just under a month. First I left some straighteners plugged in (not on - just plugged in) and when I returned to them the fuse had gone. Today I have come home and the plug of our portable heater (also plugged in but not switched on) seems to have become welded in the…

Buying a shed (workshop)
Hi, I am looking at buying a shed to use as a workshop (approx 14x8). Eventually I am looking at getting a brick building (when we can afford it!) but for now I am going to make do with a shed. I was wondering if anybody has recommendations of where to purchase a good quality shed online? I have looked at local suppliers…

Can I put windows in?
Hi everyone A few months ago we acquired planning permission to build an outbuilding in our garden. The building works have now commenced, and we have got to the stage where all the walls have now been built in breeze block ... Trouble is we now feel a couple more additional windows are required on the front elevation to…

Cheapest shed base
I'm buying a 10x5 shed but need to prep a base this week really. What's the cheapest? Ballast & concrete, slabs, or ecobase & gravel? I can't seem to fathom out which works out better! Obviously cost aside ecobase is the easiest but I don't know if it will be strong like concrete.

Induction hob problems
Hi everyone. I bought an induction hob about 6 years ago, and it always worked great... Until now! It developed an intermittent fault. When I turn it on, it works normally, but then starts showing up three horizontal lines, and stops heating for a while. Then those lines go away, and goes back to working normally. I took…

Key sticking
Brand new Rock door. The lock was really difficult . You had to manually do extra shove on the door above the lock to hear a final click then really yank the handle upwards with all the force you could muster, to enable the key to lock . We thought it would ease off and continued. After a week it was impossible to get the…

Advice needed before final decision about central heating
I have an old (fitted in 1992) back boiler with an old front gas fire. The central heating has never seen substantial enough to heat our mid terrace 3 bedroom house. I've been told I need a whole new system so have been doing a little homework. Do I get rid of the back boiler and replace with a combi boiler or do I get a…

Planning permission - what's taken into account?
Here's a question for a planning officer... Next door are thinking of building a new house in their huge garden. That would place the new house directly in front of our house. Our house is a listed building with a big clear-glazed window on the bathroom at the front of the house. We cannot change our window to obscured…

Kitchen Floor
Hi folks, I had a new floor laid in my kitchen just before Christmas as part of an ongoing renovation. Now, despite the house being largely unoccupied the surface is cracking up (it's some sort of self leveling compound). The surface also seems quite soft - you can easily score it with a knife, and the are large lump of…

next door scaffolding over my conservatory no netting
I live in a Victorian house with a glass roofed conservatory built in the side return. My next door neighbour does not have anything in his side return. He is having his house re-roofed and they have erected scaffolding in the side return. I am a bit concerned about my conservatory roof should anything fall or blow off…

What can I do about this tree?
My neighbour has a willow tree in his garden, right next to the fence between our two gardens and less than 3 metres from my back door. When I moved in two years ago it was a reasonable height, and I have since had the tree pollarded on my side of the fence. I hoped that might prompt my neighbour to get it pollarded on his…

cavity wall fixings
Just a quick question. I'm trying to hang a bathroom cabinet and have got some 8mm cavity wall plugs. Drilled the hole, all fits nicely, but doing them up they spin and spin and don't grip their "teeth" into the tiles. Is there anyway to stop it from twiddling round and round? Cheers.
