Foxes
A fox den has appeared in our communal garden. At least I assume it's foxes as the local badgers would surely have more sense and stick to the park. The area around the den is due to be cleared. I suspect the arrival of contractors and cubs will coincide. Are there rules about disturbing foxes (no plans to destroy the den,…

Artificial grass prep question.
Hi all, Our garden has a mixture of Ballast stone and one side of the garden fairly deep 10mm gravel/shingle that was installed to help with drainage. How would I go about converting this for artificial grass. I am a little worried the sand would sink into it? Photo attached. Thank you [IMG][/img]

Fence costs
HI I need to erect a fence to seperate a section of my garden for my dogs. The area is around 8m x 4m and I need a gate. Ideally I am looking at picket fence style as I don't want to block out all the light. However, I have just priced it up on a couple of websites and I am looking at £700 if we do the labour! can…

Help! What can I grow against a north facing fence
Our back garden is east facing though sunny and sheltered. We're in the south so the climate is on general considerably warmer than my Yorkshire childhood. The South facing fence and bed is obviously the most productive area, and I have a variety of pots squarely in the middle. I'm wondering what fruit/ veg/ anything I can…

Patio slabs
Hi chaps - it seems patio stones are a minefield ... so much choice, so may suppliers, and then what about "quality" we'd like a darkish colour and, of course, don't want to spend needlessly. Anyone any experience please ?

Privet hedge
We have a healthy privet hedge in our garden which gets cut twice a year. But it's getting a bit thin at the bottom with lots of gaps. The bloke who cuts it said "just take off some cuttings and stick them in the ground in the gaps; they'll soon be away". Of course, I didn't ask him what time of the year to do this! Also,…

Butterfly question
I have what I think is a speckled wood butterfly in my boxroom. It's not flying, but it is moving around, currently sitting on a trainer! I don't think it will fly out of an open window, as I say it doesn't seem to be flying, and the aperture is fairly small anyway. Should it be hibernating, is it very confused and going…

Raised veg bed
I am going to be installing raised veg beds at the back end of my garden and am indecisive regarding the material to use. I did think about breeze blocks but have gone off the idea as I have read they can leech and I think the time to install would be too much. I have sort of settled on wood but cant decide on wooden…

Railway sleepers for a path
Hi, We have a garden which is just mud. We have a puppy arriving in three weeks and need a quick and cheap solution for the garden. We will turf most of it, but I would like a path up the middle. Railway Sleepers look like a good option - but are they? I'm thinking of digging a trench, put down some plastic and lay them…

Looking for hedge recommendations
We've got approx. 80m of hawthorn hedge. We got the house 3 years ago and up until that point it had been neglected. But I don't want to pay for 80m of fence! So we gave it a heavy cut and we now trim it twice a year (end of may and end of august ish) and it is in much better shape. It varies from around 5ft to 8ft. I've…
