Recommended lawn seed?
After levelling a portion of garden that was an extreme slope, I now need to reseed the area. I have previously used Screwfit seed which I was distinctly unimpressed with. The soil isn't the greatest and I need something hard wearing. Is anyone able to recommend seed and what time of the year to seed it please?

Weed Control
I have some pretty well established weeds outside my property, strip of ground covered with stones/gravel, no weed control fabric underneath. I was minded to just rake all the stones up, dig up the weeds, lay some fabric and replace the stones. Unfortunately, I've found that this strip of ground consists mainly of totally…

Moving mature plants
We are planning an extension to our house. The nicest plants in our garden are all on the plot that will be developed. Plants are: A Honeysuckle growing against a wall. A copper beech hedge. A wisteria growing over a pergola. A climbing rose growing against a wall We are on very heavy clay in southern England. Is it…

Old rose v new rose
In my back garden ther is a very old gnarled rose 'tree'. It has lovely big roses but is has black spots all over the leaves which then wither and wrinkle up. From the reading I've done this is probably because it is an old rose. My dilemma is do I keep on struggling with spraying this old timer - which has no scent to…

Taking out conifers
The time has finally come to build the back fence in our garden. I plan to build the fence on the boundary posts. I will need to dig out the four conifers shown in the images. Any tips as to how to remove them easily? What tools and steps should I use? They are quite small, so I am hoping they wont be too difficult?

Plant suggestions
I have an area under a large willow and next to a hawthorn hedge where most of the plants I've tried have struggled, presumably as the soil is fairly shallow there and the hedge and tree are taking a lot of the water. Any suggestions for about 1msq, preferably hardy perennials and hopefully some benefit to wildlife. I…

Runner bean problem!
Hi all, hope someone can help. I have runner beans in the polythene. They have masses of flowers, are around seven feet high, but only one flower so far has started to become a bean. The others are just falling off. The fallen one mostly have tiny beans inside. Where am I going wrong? Thanks, M2m.

Thrifty Plants
So in an effort to "do up" (i.e. heavily renovate) our long neglected back and front/side gardens which until a couple of months ago were 6 feet tall with a mixture of nettles and brambles, were trying to find ways of planting out the borders with attractive but low maintenance - and most importantly - extremely cheap…

Best solar fairy lights
I love having lights in the garden but experience means I know not all solar lights are the same! I got some Maplins own lights that are great and last well into the night but they no longer are available. I bought some Cole and Bright ones which seem to be everywhere but they just don't last as long, barely an hour in…

What soil to use?
Apologies for the silly question - but I'm clueless. I have 2 pear trees, an apple tree and a plum tree, 2 pots of gooseberries, 1 raspberry and 1 strawberry, all adopted - they was here when we moved in. All trees are quite small currently standing between 4-6ft. One of the pear trees appears beyond help for fruiting but…

A question if you please!
We would like to put up a green house in the corner of a med/small back garden. But...... The next door house has a very large unprunned cooking apple tree. If we put the green house up and the wind blew a large Apple onto the greenhouse smashing a glass , who would pay for the replacement glass? There is no other place…

Starting to grow your own
Does anyone else think that some of the money wasted on the EU campaign should have been help back and given to the country by way of a start your own veg patch kit? I think we're going to need it!

Are lawnmowers cheaper in Autumn/Winter?
I'm having to do the garden with just a strimmer at the minute, and have been reading up about lawnmowers. I want to buy a Flymo turbo microlite but they're very expensive, around £75. I was thinking that out of season, they might be cheaper, but sometimes it doesn't seem to work out that way. Does anyone know if these…

Solar Lights for the garden- which are the brightess
When buying new solar Lights for the garden what do I need to look for to ascertain which has the most power and gives out the brightess light. I purchased some off E Bay which were useless as they only gave out a dim light even after a full days sunshine.I know the white light are usually better than the colour changing…

Do you leave the grass clippings on your lawn?
The more I read about this, the more confused I'm getting! I've never bothered to rake up the clippings before, but I'm wondering if I'm doing the wrong thing. I've googled it and apparently it can cause 'thatch' or problems of some sort, but then I read that actually it's good to leave it, as it adds nutrients back to the…

To a wild rose
One of the plants I removed from the front along with the weeds was what was once a standard rose, long past resuscitation. Now a rose is growing in that self same spot. Presumably it has come from a bit of root - so below the graft and more likely to be wild than a cultivar. Does anyone know what sort of rootstock it is…

What's eating my plants?!
OK, so I'm posting a few posts on this thread and yes, I am a complete gardening novice so I appreciate they may all be stupid questions! Below is a pic of a plant that has been attacked by something - any ideas what and would this be the same thing that appears to have stripped my rose bush compeltely (second pic)? We…

euclaptus tree leaves turning brown
OK, I don't know if I've done the image correctly but below should be an image of a euclaptus tree in the garden. The leaves have started to go brown whcih I'm assuming isn't mean to happen? We have very clay heave soil here and I think that's why so I'm wondering if it's possible to replant this in a large container…

Help - bees are just setting up home in awful place.
Hi. Bit of an emergency really. Bees have just started to set up home on the corner of the guttering (weren't there yesterday) that I need to clean and also right next to a pile of rubble I need to remove tomorrow. Anywhere else and I would just leave them. But it's impossible, there are about 20-25 of them swarming around…
