Under the apple tree
What can I grow? It's quite shady, and I guess dry. Nothing has survived so far. I've tried a few shrubs, mainly hebes, and bedding plants, but they never seem to take. Shrivel up, and if you tug them, the rootball just ones out exactly as it went in... Soil has a lot of clay, and is currently covered in chipped bark. The…

Gardeners World

It's mangetout time!!!
Now is the time to sow mangetout, mine get started in a seed tray in the unheated greenhouse, they will sprout mid March, harden them off and plant in the garden - by using smaller trays or even the 300g mushroom containers, bury them flush to the ground like carpet tiles. Now is the time to collect beansticks and if you…

Propagator Help
My propagating isn't going well. The only thing that's growing is mould! Surely that's not right? I planted 28 seeds (14 chilli, 14 peppers) in loo rolls cut in half). This was sat 16th. Watered a little, put the lid on and put on my kitchen windowsill. Moved it along the windowsill a couple of days later as I wasn't sure…

Leylandii Hedge advice sought
Finally got around at the weekend to taking a chainsaw to the top of a rather overgrown hedge that has been neglected for many years before we moved in and was about 18' tall. The only problem is most of the nice green growth was on the top and im now left with a nice square hedge that's brown and dead looking. Any tips on…

Don't panic!
Lots of threads of gardeners saying 'is it too late' etc No, it's too early, go back to sleep! :) If you've got the chance to put some stuff on a southfacing windowsill and get it started, go ahead, otherwise don't panic and put the kettle on. I wouldn't even dig the plot yet, I'm in the south east (east of London) and the…

Putting down a new lawn myself?
Hello! New to this particular forum and gardening in general. I have a (hopefully) quick question which you may be able to help me with :) I'm looking to lay a lawn in my back garden, ~35m2, rectangular shape. the lawn-laying bit should be quite straightforward. It's the preparation bit that I'm a bit worried about. The…

30 litre plant pots?
Hi folks Does anyone know of a cheap source for these? I have just ordered 5 fruit trees and realised it could cost a fortune for the pots to put them in! Any ideas gratefully received!

Home grown bird food
I love encouraging birds into the garden, but the cost of feeding them is becoming daft. I have just tipped the last of 30 quids worth (bought 2 weeks ago!) into the feeders. As I am planning my summer planting any money saving tips would be welcome. Thanks. Meg.:A:A

Shrub(s) for centre of garden
My garden is square, about 17m by 17m. I'm planting some fruit trees, veg patches and shrubs round the edges. I thought I'd dig a bed in the centre, and plant something with a bit of height. Any ideas for a shrub or shrubs for the centre bed? Preferably something that goes to between 1m and 2m tall, maybe more, to add…

Soil for Raised Beds??
Well after a couple of cold weekends, we've spit 8 pallets and made a log store, and today finished off 4 raised beds .... will take forever staining it all them  and plenty of blocks/left over wood for more or the woodburner :) Planning on putting them along the fence (on top of gravel), for some peas, french beans,…

New garden, wedding flowers
Hi everyone! :) I'm very new to this board so please be gentle! I have a massive garden which is horrible, overgrown bushes, uneven bumpy grass and lots and lots of overgrown BlackBerry bushes, it needs sorting out and I have no idea where to begin. I have lived here for a year so far and the property was empty for two…

What is the "stork connector" on an orange called?!
While looking through a "first book" with my nephew, who is 10 months old, there is a picture of an orange. He has become transfixed by the hard bit on top of the orange where the stork used to attach to. Now - being convinced that I should be educating him on the minutia of life from an early age, I feel the need to know…

Moss(?) on new patio
About 6 months ago I laid a patio in my back garden. Over the last few months I've started to notice what I assume is the early stages of moss appearing on it. I assume it moss as it's green, but it's not that horrible full on furry stuff at this stage! It appears mostly on the joins, but some have moss starting to cover…

Is it too late to plant??? (image inc)
Hi, (image below) I plan to plant a row of flowers or plants to cover the gap under my shed. Is it too late to do it now? If not when would I need to do it by? If it is then when can I do it and would doing it now be bad for the plants? Also, I plan to plant a rosemary plant that I currently have in a pot next to the apple…

Rat in my garden in broad daylight!
Omg, I have just seen a rat running around in my garden. It was sticking mainly to the stone dry wall running in and out but it also ran across my lawn toward my kitchen window. When I banged on the window it ran back in the wall. The wall. Behind the wall is a farmers field. The rat was quite big and light brown in…

Qualcast greenhouse
Does anyone have any experience of the aluminium greenhouse made by qualcast? I have inherited one which doesn't have any of the rubber glazing seals. I was going to try to use a method of using silicon to seal the glass but on closer inspection have found that this won't be possible so I need to know which rubber seals to…

Can you identify this bush, and how should I cut it back?
We have this bush (see pics below) on the side of our house that we want to cut back drastically. It's around 150 cm deep (from the front to the wall) and we'd ideally like it to be 1/2 of that (75cm). * Can anyone identify this bush? * Can I just hack it back (to 1/2 it's current depth)? - or do I need to be more…

Cold night, no frost
I left a digital thermometer out last night, and it registered -5C which surprised me. When I retrieved it the T was ~0C. And yet there was no frost, not on the grass, not on my car. Is this common? I've never noticed this before.
