Can anyone identify this thing??
Can anyone identify this odd creature about to become slug fodder. It was in my sisters garden tonight, looks like a scallop to me but didn't think they were known to be wild in Hampstead (and apparently it was pulsating)... http://twitpic.com/fhstg (hope the link works)

Pinchng out Runner Beans
Why do sites tell you to pinch out runner beans when they have reached the end of the canes. What does this do? I am assuming it keeps them flowering.

Has Weed & Feed scorched my lawn?
I applied 'weed and feed' the same brand I always use, in the same quantities, and when the grass was dry as I always do. Left the rain to do it's thing, as suggested (the rain was the next day, and I thought it'd be fine as it does say not to apply it if rain is immenent). Today I have large black patches od what looks…

Path - add to it or remove
Have taken out our hedge and put in a fence. I personally wanted the gate to be in line with the concrete path that is already layed, i thought to keep it simple we'd just paint the concrete, spruce it up a bit. I can't comment on the fence cos i didn't help put it up, but OH and his dad said it was easier to move the gate…

Digging up bulbs.
First year in new house folks, and I have loads of bulbs in for quick and easy summer colour this year which worked out well. I read in Prima today how to take your bulbs up and store over winter, but do I need to do this, or is it just if you want to move them? I'm having trouble searching online, so thought if I just…

River Cottage Kitchen
Do any else feel as though they are running this kitchen. Allotment is producing quicker than I can blanch and freeze. Have loads of frozen carrots, beans, ruhrbarb, raspberries and redcurrents. Making soup a few times a week to use up courgettes and leeks. Just froze a stack of windfall apples. I feel I am living the life…

B&Q Tomato Plant Food withdrawn
DIY chain B&Q has withdrawn part of its plant food range after a test by Which? Gardening magazine found it was contaminated. A trial by the magazine found using Organic Living Tomato Food had a similar effect on plants to using weed killer and tests on the product found it had been contaminated with a herbicide…

My pansies have arrived - when is latest I should plant them?
I ordered about 42 pansies from one of the broadsheet newspapers who were doing an offer. I didn't really expect them to arrive so soon but they turned up today. My plan was to wait to plant them until I'm ready to plant my bulbs as I was hoping to plant my pots in layers with bulbs at the bottom. What should I do? When do…

Old carpet and rotted plastic grrr
Hi, 2 weeks ago - i finally got an allotment yay. It was covered in 10ft high brambles. Have cut down all the brambles and yesterday planned to start digging up the roots. However found the ground very difficult to dig. Worked out that about 5in under the soil was the remenants of an old carpet. It seems as if the…

Lonicera Japonica Halliana
I had a beautiful Lonicera Japonica Halliana which was about five foot high. My puppy decided to dig it up today and run around the garden with it. I was not over impressed! While doing this it snapped, the roots are still intact and there is about three inches left of the stalk and there is a tiny shoot on it, will this…

Chicken Health Natural Remedies....
Hello any fellow chicken keepers out there and I hope this is the correct forum for this post. I keep ex-battery chickens, which are a great benefit to my gardening and growing my own food efforts, plus they do get a spoilt retirement in return. As part of their basic health routine, I worm them monthly, use powder to…

Vaseline on trees
Bear with me on this one! Last year our Victoria Plum tree had an infestation of brown maggots which burrowed into the fruit and ruined it. I read that this was due to some insect that climbs up the tree and burrows into the fruit. Rather than spend money on greasebands, earlier this year I put a thick layer of vaseline…

Lupins - or is it a pretty weed?
I don't remember planting a lupin but I now have a deep purple specimen which I think may be a lupin in the corner of my garden. We live in the country surrounded by fields and it has crossed my mind that it may be some awful type of weed. I mentioned it to one of my friends but she has only had lemon/orange/red lupins and…
