Familia rodante (aka Rolling Family) (2004, IMdB 6.5) - The Independent
Directed by Pablo Trapero
Starring Graciana Chironi, Nicolás López, Liliana Capurro

Familia-Rodante_262681a.jpg

Pablo Trapero is unable to live up to the expectations created by Crane World and El Bonaerense in this stalling trans-Argentinian road movie. The odyssey begins promisingly, as 80-something Graciana Chironi and her family cram into a rickety camper van to attend a wedding on the Brazilian border. However, their archetypally dysfunctional crises soon begin to grate and it becomes difficult to identify with either the middle-aged siblings unable to forgive a past indiscretion, the teenage mother avoiding her violent biker boyfriend, or the adolescents intent on more than cousinly kissing. The desire to show how today's unbearable trials become tomorrow's cherished memories is laudable and shrewd. But despite some spirited performances and Guillermo Nieto's naturalistic cinematography, Trapero's execution is disappointingly flat.

Land and Freedom (2004, IMdB 7.5) - The Independent on Sunday
Directed by Ken Loach
Starring Ian Hart

Land-Freedom_262682a.jpg

While the oft-romanticised Spanish Civil War seemed an obvious choice of subject for the defiantly “Old Left” Ken Loach, it was also quite a stretch in terms of action and scale after such domestic dramas as Family Life and Raining Stones. That he handles the combat scenes and period detail here with such confidence adds to his reputation as one of Britain's most vital film-makers. To ground the story, screenwriter Jim Allen uses Ian Hart's fallible unemployed Liverpudlian as our “guide” to the conflict as he signs up to fight against Franco. Some have criticised the film for speechmaking and didacticism, but this is all part of Loach's bid to open up the sometimes awkward politics of the time. The full-bodied performances and courage to question make this a rich, thought-provoking war movie.

IMHO this, if sticky, would be better placed on the freebies board.

Should it be moved? IMHO freebies forum is for a "no spend required" freebie, where as these DVDs are only free if you purchase a newspaper.

yes, you're right, RufusA. Freebies is only for "no spend required" freebies so this doesn't fit into the criteria of that board. I think it was suggested at some point that these should be put in Shop but don't drop but they never seem to be.

However, the thread won't be made a sticky as the stickies on this board are official/information ones only. Bargain offer posts have to take their chances along with all the others :)

If a thread is popular it will stay near the top of the board anyway :)
  • Yes, this obviously shouldn't be in the "no spend required" freebies section.

If this thread can't be made sticky, then I would be happy to keep updating the first post of this thread to reflect good things that get suggested to make it easy to see in one place what is currently on offer.
  • Don't forget your free DVDs this weekend !

I dont think there should be a sticky for this or people wont see them, they are only one day offers to they soon move down once over.

The only reason to have a sticky is if there was a problem with too many posts and there is not.

  • I take your point.

As there seem to be giveaway DVDs on an almost weekly basis, I wanted to start a thread that was kept alive by people adding DVDs that they hear about. Then I will keep an eye out for such posts and keep the original first post uptodate by editing it myself so that it's easy to see what is free that particular week.

So all I ask is for people to go to this thread and add what they find, and I will do the rest. How does that sound?
  • Hi white_were_wolf

Thanks for the offer, sounds good to me. I keep missing out on recent free DVDs.

I posted about Wings of Desire earlier this week and that's on page 3 now!

I was thanked 4 times so mustn't grumble.

  • Last Saturday I got Cabaret from the Times, Bob the Builder from the Mail and East is East from the Guardian. Tomorrow I'm expecting The Last Emperor through my letterbox with the Times, I can't take up the Mail offers because they have to be exchanged in store and I live over ten miles from a Smiths or a Woolworths, but what's the Guardian got on offer? Anybody know?
