Completely new to saving, please help! 11th Mar 18 at 4:19 PM

I've just been going through my monthly statement showing my outgoings and I realised I need to start putting more away as savings. I have only ever had 1 bank account which is a Santander Current Account. I've had this since I was a child and it's where get paid, direct debits, online shopping accounts are linked.

I'm so clueless when it comes to this so ideally need someone to explain it as my aim is to put aside around £1000 each month from my pay into separate savings and keep my current account with the rest for direct debits and general living expenses.I know that I would like to make withdrawals and transactions from this saving account so do not want penalties.

As I'm very new to this, please can someone advise what I should do and the best saving accounts for this?

    Thanks a lot!
