No Buying Unnecessary Toiletries Feb. 2018 31st Jan 18 at 6:50 PM
Here we go again for another month. As usual this initial post has been shamelessly copied from the many previous months. A big thank you to sstevo19 for starting us off last month.

Welcome all newbies and regulars to this very friendly and chatty thread where we give lots of lovely tips on how to use up your stash and lots of support and encouragement if you need them.

Keep up the pampering and keep down the spending: let!!!8217;s make the naughty step an empty and lonely place this month (rather than one so long that it can be seen from space)! Will this be the month when the "usual suspects" rein it in a bit? Let's see..... (but I doubt it!)

Remember - those products do nothing for you while they are stashed in drawers, boxes and cupboards!

We are eternally grateful to Katie Clampet who set up this fab challenge in January 2010. Here's her original challenge post:

"No buying any new toiletries, cosmetics, perfume etc... until I have used up ALL the ones I already have. I got a huge amount of (really nice) stuff for Christmas but I am going to resist the urge to browse Boots, Asda, Superdrug etc, and pop another tub of cream, face scrub, shampoo or conditioner into my basket. I reckon the stuff I have will last me until possibly June. I have decided that the money I save I will put into my special holiday account. Anyone else?"

Lots of us have taken part in the challenge over the past few months (and some of us even years!!) and are making great progress in reducing our stashes and unnecessary/excessive spending.

Regulars can ignore this, but a quick resume is always helpful for newbies:

Why not add the challenge to your signature as a reminder?

How about taking a bit of time to do a stock-take and see if there are any gaps in your stash that you might need to spend on this month? Some of us set a budget for the month for essential purchases or to help with withdrawal symptoms, others like to go cold-turkey!! Other ideas which some people find useful: Listing everything out so you can cross things off as used to increase the sense of achievement, and putting a sum of money in a pot each time you use up an item to save for something you really want, or simply to assist in making future essential purchases "cash neutral".

Remember the challenge is about making the most of your money, enjoying your products, finding which products really suit you best and are worth buying, giving yourself a well-deserved pampering and breaking the habit of buying for the sake of buying. In money-saving tradition, it should also be about making your products l-a-s-t as long as possible (although the temptation of using an unloved shower gel extravagantly to finish it off is sometimes too much to bear!).

Brand new products (or opened perfume) sell well on eBay.

Unsuitable products can be repurposed and used for other jobs (shower gel/shampoo as handwash etc).

Some items can be returned to certain stores for exchange (for essential items or gifts!!) without a receipt.

Unwanted items can be recycled as gifts or for gift hampers (saving the money you'd have spent on gifts).

Unsuitable items can be donated to charity or a local women's refuge as mentioned earlier

It helps to avoid the places where temptation lurks for you; be it QVC, Boots, Body Shop, email newsletter, the supermarket toiletries aisles, Grabbit board, online toiletries browsing, seductive department store beauty counter offers etc. Remember retailers are making offers and promotions all the time, so there will always be another deal! Honest!

Good luck all for February 2018 and indeed the coming months, and remember to keep your stash lists updated, keep popping in for inspiration and support and to report your UU's and IN's, especially any sales bargains - we want a nosy!

Welcome to all newbies - the more the merrier. Please introduce yourselves so we can welcome you properly! Do de-lurk if you are lurking, this is one of the friendliest threads on MSE.

Oh - and anyone thinking "OMG my stash is FAR bigger than all of theirs, I cant possibly join" - believe you me, we have been doing this challenge for well over a year some of us - you wont scare us, and I can almost guarantee that someone somewhere will have had more and survived.... we are very supportive (and protective - so don't be scared!!) oh - and did we mention that are nosy??!!

    Useful abbreviations and jargon!

    WBA - Will Buy Again
    UU - Use Ups
IN - Self explanatory - stuff you've gained into your stash - warning: lines may be given out for unnecessary purchases or you may be sent to the naughty step!
NBI - A non-bought item such as a present, gift with purchase or free sample
WNBA - Will Not Buy Again!
Glitch - when a shop/online store make a pricing mistake so you end up paying less or even get freebies!
PYN(M/T/W/Th/F/Sa/Su) DELETE AS APPROPRIATE! - Paint Your Nails Monday/Tuesday...... it allows everyone to try and finish those dastardly nail varnishes with group support! You can never be too groomed for this thread. Also see PY(T)N... - for toenails!
Splutterer - the stage where an item is nearing the end of it's life and spluttering - also the most annoying and seemingly never ending stage!
GWP - Gift With Purchase - a sample or mini sized item
HG - Holy Grail - this is the product you would go back for time and time again, it does the job brilliantly, and is either economical, or so fantastic price becomes no object!
NPI - Near Purchasing Incident (OMG we all have those!)
LHJ - Long Haul Job - for those products - love 'em or hate 'em - that never seem to end no matter how often you use them
PRCP - Pink Rose Candle Philosophy inspired by Erma Bombeck who said: 'If I had my life to live over again I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose that melted in storage'. Don't keep things 'for best' or 'for a special occasion'. That day never arrives. Give the best to yourself now and enjoy it. (Thanks to McCulloch29 for introducing this thought provoking sentiment to us)
GA - for an out that was given away to charity, as a present, or "just because" rather than binned or UU
TA - for an out that was thrown away due to going off (generally as it has been lurking at the back of a stash since time immemorial) or for any other reason such as a broken container or spillage
PP - Project Pan: a list of specific items targeted to be used up

If anyone can think of any more we can add to the list so newbies won't be intimidated by our jargon!

    Graduates

Here is a list of our lovely, fragrant ladies who have polished and pampered their way through their products and managed to get their toiletries stash under control. Ladies - congratulations, you are an inspiration to the rest of us, xx . Thanks also to InaPickle who suggested we start the Graduate list. To join the list of graduates let us know by posting that you are graduating in big colourful letters, that way the OP can easily spot you and add you to the list, or better still - PM the OP as the thread can move really quickly! You may also wish to add how many products you have used up during the challenge. Good luck ladies! xx

    One UU this afternoon:

The Body Shop Shea Hand Cream 30ml WDBA and have. I love this hand cream. I'm going to replace it with the Mixa one I bought yesterday or the big Shea hand cream I bought

I should be finished with my shampoo and conditioner in the next few days as well

    2 more UUs

Sample sachet of Bare Minerals Intense Power eye cream - too small to judge the product.

1000ml ABC Tea Atree skin wash. HG. One more in stash. Will be interesting to measure how long the new bottle lasts. I've just poured the last of this into a bath. Have an awful cold that started today.
Back for the No Buying Toiletries challenge. I pledge to only buy when I run out of a product that is not already in my stash no matter what wonderful emails land in in my Inbox or threads I read on MSE re: glitches!

    Two UUs tonight:

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel sample WMBA. This was nice and easy to apply. Quite sticky on the skin though.

The Body Shop Shea Nourishing Body Butter 200ml WDBA and have. This is my favourite Body Butter. This has last since the middle of September, I use it nearly everyday on my feet when I get out of the shower.

UU- Wet and Wild Coverall pressed powder WMBA,
bought this in the reduced section, I didnt think it would be that great but was surprised, it performed as well as a high end powder for me, kept shine at bay and didnt settle into lines etc. I would pick it up again if I find it after getting through others in stash.

    One OUT today:

Hylamide Low-Molecular HA Serum 30ml I sold this on a Skincare Exchange on Reddit. I was never going to get around to using it.

    And two UUs:

Tigi Bedhead Dumb Blonde Shampoo 750ml WDBA and have. My favourite shampoo, nice scent and it keeps my hair in good condition

Tigi Bedhead Dumb Blonde Reconstructor 750ml WDBA and have. It helps nourish my bleach blonde hair

I'm on a roll lately with UUs

An IN and I actually bought this one! (I get a lot of free beauty bits to review, of varying quality, it has to be said, so it's not all roses,)
The Aldi Lacura Cellsation 400ml micellar water arrived,
I didn't expect it, as it's not on sale in the shop until tomorrow, but am I complaining?

    UU
Loreal Elvive coconut conditioner samples x 3

    IN
Head and Shoulders shampoo x 2

Resisted some Superdrug bargains I didnt need yet, but then purchased a Remington facial brush and body brush set for £46 from Sainsburys, a really good bargain I was not looking for! I googled reviews and have since discovered that apparently Remington no longer produce replacement heads :-/ yet Boots still sell the facial brush at full price! Really annoyed about this. Will have to do some serious internet searching.

UU : Bath and Body Works Sparkling Cranberry hand cream. Sad this is finished. Have 3 small handcreams in stash and one fill size at work. Once all the small ones are gone I am going to repurchase this. Have pulled 30ml Time Bomb cream out.

No UU up yet for February, everything is taking ages.

However, I really did well today in M&S with the Gatineau rep who was trying the hard sell with skincare. I was in buying a birthday gift and am really pleased I managed to walk away with just gifts. The stuff looked good and I would be willing to try it, but I kept thinking of my ridiculous stash and how I really don't want to add to it

After a good January in terms of UUs, I haven't had much progress in Feb.
I might have some towards the end of the month. I have however some INs :

Clinique Blackhead Solutions Self-Heating Blackhead Extractor - this has recently come out and I wanted to give it a go as pores over my nose look very clogged and nothing else seems to be working.

Clinique Fresh Pressed!!!8482; Renewing Powder Cleanser with Pure Vitamin C - one month supply for AM cleansing. I have read good reviews about it and wanted to try.

Boots had 10% off for two luxury brand purchases so tiny bit of consolation there.

Then I went to Debenhams to try new Benefit Mascara. Very good to be fair but I ended up buying Lancome Monsieur Big as it was 15% off. I wasn't going to buy a mascara as I have few others but then couldn't resist. Sigh.
I also purchased Lancome Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate. This was £10 off so paid £29 - which i think is a good deal.

I've got some INs, I needed some more of my HG cleansing water as I'm nearly down to my last bottle and I use it twice a day, every day.

I saw they had a free gift at Debenham's but that wasn't swaying me, then they had 25% off....still didn't budge.....then they sent me a code for an extra 10% off, well it would have been rude not to wouldn't it?

    Lancôme Eau Micellaire Douceur 400ml x 2

    Lancôme Cils Booster Mascara 5.5ml
Lancôme Hydra zen Day Cream 15ml
Lancôme Hydra Zen Eye Cream 5ml
    Lancôme L'Absoloue Sheer 202 1.65ml
    Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara 2ml

Also I had my hair cut short and needed some styling products to give it texture and hold as I had nothing like that in my stash, just styling creme and oil for my old haircut.

    VO5 Styling Wax 75ml
    VO5 Texturising Gum 75ml

    Some UUs
Avon Nail Experts Nail Enamel Remover 150ml - WNBA, nowhere near as good as others, it'll do but nothing amazing!
Nivea Roll-on deodorant 50ml - Sensitive & Pure - WBA, I only buy ones in glass bottles as they're the only ones that don't seem to give out too much product.
Femfresh Powder 200g - HG powder, WDBA.

I also GA a lot of products to a women's refuge, the more expensive full sized stuff is a little out of date but I have checked it's ok before giving it away. The other stuff is samples or cheapies, hopefully others will make use of it!

I gave away some of the smaller S&G stuff as well as I won't use it before it goes off.

Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser with Tamarind 5ml
Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel with Marula Oil 5ml
Formula Absolute Ultimate Sleep Cream 15ml
Heathcote & Ivory Sakura Silks Hand Cream 30ml
James Read H2O Illuminating Tan Mist 30ml
    Lancôme Hydra Intense Mask 100ml x 3
    L'Occitane Almond Hand Cream 10ml x 3
    L'Occitane Arl!sienne EDT 7.5ml
    L'Occitane Arl!sienne Scented Soap 50g
L'Occitane Cherry Blossom Perfumed Soap 75g
L'Occitane Delightful Rose Hand Cream 30ml
    L'Occitane Honey Soap 100g

I have a basket with some of my toiletries in and I tidied it when watching TV. Recycled some packaging and took out some samples/products to start using. I've bought a Bare Minerals set a long time ago from TK Maxx. It was in a case with a zip and included all products like foundation, powder, concealer etc.
I did use it a lot initially but then stopped using it. I was using the concealer every now and then but today I finally decided to TA it. I will keep the case and two little brush came with it so that I can use them when travelling. Case would be good for my other brushes too.

Boots Euphoric Mist Fruit & Sweet Amber Body Fragrance 75ml - WBA. I still have two aerosol body sprays left to use out of the twenty or so I had when I started this challenge a few years ago.

I also have one body butter and my sample size foot cream, each with one use left.

    One UU this afternoon:

Listerine Total Care Zero Mouthwash 250ml WDNBA. I had never tried Listerine before but this was vile. It had no alcohol in it but it still burnt my mouth. I forced myself to use it up. I'm so glad it's gone, it was vile. Replaced with a bottle of Colgate Plax Soft Mint, let's hope this is much better.

Painted my nails with Maybelline SuperStay 7 days - Porcelaine.
I've used GelSetter from Essie as top coat. This one is a bit old and felt a bit sticky but still good.
As base, I've used Beautiful Nails from Herbal Skin Doctor.

It has been a long time since I've painted my nails and I have lots of nail polish. I will try to do a bit more of this. Almost therapeutic.

I tried all the Listerine mouthwashes going, in the end I sent a complaint to them because they were all vile and burnt my mouth! If you don't get on with the Colgate, try Dentyl, I have sensitive teeth and Dentyl is the only brand that doesn't aggravate

In the end I decided to try the Ultradex one I bought. It's alright but I'm glad I only bought a little bottle of it. I might try the Dentyl one after I've finished the mouthwashes I have in my stash
