    Marriage Allowance Problem

Marriage Allowance Problem 8th Jan 18 at 2:21 PM
    Hi all!

We recently discovered the Marriage Allowance via Money Saving Expert emails. I went via the Government Gateway and applied. We were approved and soon received a tax rebate for £230. So far so good - this was a massive help at Christmas.

So with the money spent, in January my wife received a Tax letter from HMRC saying she now owes £230, since she actually earned over the minimum tax threshold. Whilst it turns out this is true (we didn't actually realise when applying, as my wife's salary is now definitely below the threshold) I am wondering if I have any grounds for negotiating something with HMRC as they have ordered us to pay the amount by March 1st, and we don't have that sort of money available.

It seems wrong that they should issue it if it wasn't payable / applicable in the first place. Do we have a leg to stand on do you think?

Thanks in advance for any help.

at the time you weren't eligible, so you owe the money.

Remind the readers, who told them it was payable?

HMRC accepted your wife's claim to transfer the allowance at the time.

When your wife's allowance was reduced the tax due has arisen.

She can contact HMRC and ask if she can arrange time to pay.
