Freedompop, serious or scam? 5th Jan 18 at 4:04 PM
As a very low use mobile user the free monthly Freedompop appeals to me. I understand that charges apply after the relatively low data usage limit and I am ok with that. But the reviews of Freedompop are very worrying. It seems that about 50 percent of review love the company and the others 50 percent think they are scammers. Has this company come to the attention of the fantastic MSE and forum yet?

They have failed to publish a proper tariff list with details of non-inclusive rates and have been unresponsive to requests to do so for more than two years. This despite the Ofcom regulations requiring it.

I have a couple of free sims and use one for occasional internet use only. I have no reason to criticise them, but might be different if I used them for calls. I turned off the automatic top-ups and ordered them when they were free, so they never cost me anything.

OP, Iíve noticed that sometimes calls wonít connect and texts can take a long time to arrive. I wouldnít recommend it as a main mobile number (at least not the free service).

Rather get the Three data sim with the free 200MB a month, calls are only 3p and texts 2p, itís a lot more reliable.

One notch short of a scam.

You sign up for the free service. They sign you up for a paid service. Try to downgrade it and they "don't recognise your password". You have to jump through hoops with the support team to reset your password and downgrade.

When you check your credit card statement you will find they have billed you. Try to find out for what and you will find you have been signed up for Value Added services without your knowledge that only now appear on your service plan. Ask for a refund and they stonewall you. I am going to go for a refund via credit card and a complaint to ASA. Let's see how that goes. In short, avoid this unless you enjoy bucketloads of hassle.

I didn't and I don't. Had two sims for about 2-3 years and never paid a penny. Downgraded and changed settings without speaking with anyone or calling them (though the website was a bit tricky to navigate).
