I had a contract in 2009 for Orange Broadband internet, business £10 a month. It kept on dropping out so eventually it turned out that the dongle was interfering with the anti virus software. I eventually agreed with Orange to send it back. However I'm slightly concerned that the contract was never ceased and they have started some legal proceedings.

I can't remember the exact circumstances because it was so long ago.

I left the country at the end of 2009 so I wouldn't have received any correspondence. Me leaving the country wasn't related to cancelling the year contract.

That's more than 6 years ago so will only appear in the CRAs if the account is still open or otherwise settled. It won't appear as a default even if it is actually a default due to the 6 years cut-off point.
