Council Tax question [Single Person discount] 29th Nov 17 at 6:51 PM
    Hi All,

New to the forum but I've used the site for a long time so hello

I have recently received a letter requesting I confirm details regarding the occupancy of my flat (It's me and one student so I received the SPD)

They have stayed with me for a little over a year now, but my concern is that I'm unsure if I previously noted she was staying at the flat to the council.

Now from their perspective it shouldn't make a difference, since I'd get the discount either way (I'd either be living alone if I didn't declare them, or living with a disregarded adult so I'd get it anyway) but I'm concerned I've dropped myself in it but letting them know the timescale they've been here.

    Can anyone confirm either way?

    Many thanks,

Just confirm to them the name of your co-occupant, and his student status.

I imagine they may then request a copy of the college document that confirms he is a student (I believe there's a specific form he should have).

Provided you answer honestly, and you are right about his student status, you'll be fine.

So they won't mind it's something that may not have been declared before?

The whole thing just worried me a bit which is why I can't remember if I even did it or not, but I've told them the date range the student has been with me at the flat and I know the University provides proof (I went to the same University) so I should have no trouble providing what they need.

Thank you for the incredibly speedy reassurance!

They might be a bit miffed, but would only do anything about it if you owed them money.

    You (apparently) don't.

I believe that since the budget cuts, they have sacked the bottom-spanking staff.

many/most councils will send a very standard letter to anyone who is not paying 100% council tax asking them to confirm their status is still applicable. A SPD letter would, I'd expect, be sent to you once every year as that is how it was done in my time.

as you are already claiming SPD, and remain perfectly entitled to it based on what you say, there is nothing sinister about the letter at all. Reply, and instead focus on enjoying Christmas.

Thank you both, it's very reassuring to hear. I'll give them a call tomorrow to confirm the information I have submitted but if it's just a standard review I'll calm down in the meantime since I've done nothing wrong!

Such speedy and helpful responses. I like it here
