Payment made to in valid sort code.... 11th Oct 17 at 5:24 PM
First time I have ever made this mistake but I sent a payment yesterday (10th) to a customer, when I spoke to them this morning I noticed a typo on the sort code. The sort code I used was 900128 which according to the Payments UK search is not a valid sort code, so in theory it should arrive back in the next day or so?? I am only concerned as my bank was a little, 'you will just have to wait and see', even though my bank happens to have it sort code structure start with 90 and they confirmed no branch with 900128.... It was a large sum. So should I be ok?

IMO the system should have rejected the payment in the first place?

Bank of Ireland are not direct members of the faster payments scheme so I guess you would not get instantaneous confirmation on whether the payment had been accepted. It will bounce back by the end of today & will be in your account tomorrow.

hope so, I would have though because the sort code does not exist it would be suspended with the BOI system and they could tell me more,

It will automatically bounce, and I suppose your bank are saying they won't do anything until that happens. Normally they won't do anything until it completes, either bounces or goes through. As its an invalid sort code it will come back automatically, no need to worry.

You can check the sort code at http://www.fasterpayments.org.uk/consumers/sort-code-checker
