Stay on Sim only or upgrade to Apple iPhone SE ? 26th Sep 17 at 9:07 PM
    Hi

I'm with o2 on a sim only deal of £18 per month for unlimited calls & texts and 10GB data. Have my own iPhone 5s, 16GB.

Am finding I haven't enough memory on the phone and its needs to be charged twice a day now!

Been looking at upgrade prices and o2 is offering me an Apple iPhone SE 32GB with 12GB data, unlimited calls and texts for £34 a month (24 month contract - no upfront fees)

Not sure what to do as I've been sim only for years now!

Three have the iPhone SE with 12 GB data, unlimited texts and calls for £25 a month with £19 upfront which works out £197 cheaper over the 24-month contract than O2 at £34 per month with no upfront fee.

Alternatively, if you can afford it, it is much better value to buy the phone outright and get a cheap sim-only deal. The iPhone SE is £349 or £16.79 per month for 24 months (direct from Apple) and a sim-only deal from Three is £14 per month.

Or even get phone from Apple at £16.79 pm and sim from Three at £14 pm (both for 24 months) = £30.79 pm instead of £34 with O2 = £77.04 saved over 2 years - same phone, same amount of data/texts/calls

For £150 on Amazon you can get a Moto G4 plus which is a better phone than the iphone SE. For £165 you can get a Moto G5 which is significantly better.

I wouldn’t tie myself to a phone + SIM contract, we have always been SIM only, currently on Three with their 12 month contract of 30GB, unlimited mins, cost £18/month.

We have 2 x iPhone SE, both bought outright from an Apple Store when they were £439 for the 64GB version. Running iOS11 on them. Directly purchased iPhones tend to have better warranty coverage, no 3rd parties to argue with, only Apple.

once you have all your stuff on an iPhone, you can just get a newer one, and copy all the data, contacts, photos etc straight over, and it will be seamless.

So that's all good and sensible providing you don't want an expensive late model

I’m in the same position, i.e. 5S owned outright, been SIM-only for 6 years or so and much prefer doing it that way. However, my circumstances have worsened considerably, so I’ve gone for e2save’s current special: SE for £14pm after cashback. Only 1GB of data, unfortunately, but I don’t use much anyway.

Given the SE is effectively the 6S with a 4 inch screen I'd recommend upgrading.

Looking at YouTube videos there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a performance boost with anything newer than the 6S except if you are playing games or want the portrait mode camera.
