And now the fuse is lit... 25th Sep 17 at 6:40 PM
    Well...

I have a house. And a mortgage. Took years and cost a fortune, as Batman said once.

Don't talk to me about surveys (though this one at "so so" was better than many). Or surveyors (I wouldn't use this one again - seemed scared of ladders). Or vendors (though this one was great). Or estate agents (this one was truly dreadful). Or solicitors (though this one was great).

I don't suppose this diary is going to be much about finances or mortgages, because let's face it, apart from a little kerfuffle once a month (when I get paid) nothing much seems to happen. It'll probably just being rude about things, and encouraging others to be rude too...

Welcome aboard the mortgage diary. Hopefully it will be an express elevator to hell - going down!

Twenty five years seems a long time otherwise...

My...it's a bit brisk out there. A mere 3.5C and blowing a fair breeze.

House is warm and seems water-tight. Those are the main things.

Letterbox rattles somewhat in the wind though.

So...the BS I have the mortgage with has written to my old address telling me my savings accounts interest rates have changed.

I wonder if they know I've moved...

One of the letters was amusing as it states a change in interest rate from 0.00% to 0.00%...

So today, I discovered that when the sun shines from a certain direction, one of my neighbour's houses shines X-men logos on the house opposite.

So...it would appear that my cynicism about "the great and the good" is as weak as dishwater in comparison with actual reality... https://news.sky.com/story/long-read-grenfell-britains-fire-safety-crisis-11146108

Will it end up in a PR stunt, a whitewashing or a deep-sixing under the carpet? Perhaps I should run a poll..?

After Ronan Point significant changes were made to make sure collapse of system built tower blocks due to gas leaks didn't happen again.

After Grenfall the Government said they would fund essential works to prevent another Grenfell. It seems the fire service are not the people to decide what 'essential' is. The Government continue to argue.

I really really hate the 'stay put' policy. I understand the logic of it. You protect the stairwells and that way you contain any fire but it is absolutely pointless, in my opinion, if you are recreating a candle on the outside of the building.

Those who are biased on one side of the equation make poor decisions, and there are always pros and cons which only someone in the middle considers. Certainly putting a ton of fire doors in would stop the transmission of fire ('fire' being half of the "Fire Service's" remit), but if it takes so long to get through that the building has collapsed - that's not so good.

Did you see how fast I skated past that 'if'?

So, for example, a long time ago, but not in a galaxy far, far away, there was the event we now call "World War 2". A bunch of people started taking records of damage from returning bombers to see where they were most vulnerable (such as the tail), and armouring them. Sounds reasonable right?

    Wrong.

Fortunately, intelligent people were still an indigenous species of this country back then, and they reasoned that if it came back full of holes, then that part had only (at best) a passing relationship with keeping the plane up in the air. They actually armoured the bits of the plane which were never damaged, reasoning that that must be because if it was damaged, then the plane dropped out of the sky and never came back.

For 9/11 people were told to shelter in place. Those that did, died.

Some survivors mention crossing people on the stairs coming back up. They'd been ordered to shelter in their offices. They died.

For Grenfell, those that stayed - died.

For something like a building fire, there are far fewer people who wandered into trouble and died, than stayed and died.

but it is absolutely pointless, in my opinion, if you are recreating a candle on the outside of the building.

However, my greatest problem with that Sky News report was the use of the legal system to silence people bringing forward safety concerns. Certainly, someone needs to go through all the threats issued (with public appeals for more information/threats) and disbar those solicitors involved. Then go through court records and check there were no successful cases for silence, and do likewise for any judges concerned.

Not so much the solicitors Z - they will, remember, have been working to instructions in the majority cases at least. Those who gave those instructions, however...

Point of interest on your aircraft analogy too - the RAF suffered a higher proportionate loss of Spitfires than Hurricanes - in spite of the fact that the Hurri's are older tech in terms of airframe built. That was exactly the thing that saved them in many cases though - a wooden framework with fabric stretched over is less prone to fatal damage than an aluminimum skin which tends to tear away when damaged.

The solicitors *should* at that point refuse to act for the client in that matter if they persist - again because of ethics concerns.

The solicitors are not going to be sharing in the manslaughter charges because of their position, despite anyone being able to point to cause and effect for safety concerns remaining private/hidden (through litigation threats).

    It's snaaaann...

I'll wait until the roads have died down before venturing out. The AA traffic report is already an angry red, and it's only early.

In financial news: Don't run two houses kids - it's very expensive...

And it would seem the A68 has been closed because of a stuck wagon. Which person in their right mind would go on that part of the A68 in a wagon in the snow?
