Citizens Advice calls for roll out of Universal Credit to be paused 12th Sep 17 at 1:22 PM
Citizens Advice has called for the roll our of Universal Credit to be paused, while problems with the system are fixed.

    Citizens Advice says:

"... some aspects of UC risk causing or exacerbating personal debt problems. With UC roll-out due to accelerate significantly from October 2017, identifying and tackling the problems new claimants are facing now - before problems become widespread - is necessary to ensure UC meets its aims.

Our evidence shows that our UC clients are more likely to have debt problems than those on legacy benefits. A quarter (26%) of the people we helped with UC also needed help with debt, compared to 19% for legacy benefits. They are also struggling to pay off their debts. More than 2 in 5 (41%) debt clients on UC have no spare income to pay creditors, compared to a third (33%) on legacy benefits."

Find out more about the problems and recommendations from Citizens Advice and feel free to discuss here.

UC has been beset by problems from the outset. Roll out should have been completed nation wide by the end of 2016. Although there have been pauses in the past I suspect that the rollout will be pushed forward simply because governments wants that.

Labour MPs have already raised this issue. The government's response ignored the issues and gave a stock answer on how UC was getting more people into work.

"Arbeit macht frei" springs to mind.
