£38 to cancel car insurance with Aviva 10th Sep 17 at 2:03 PM
We having sold a car in the eleventh month out twelve we were surprised that Aviva invoked a cancellation charge.

What happens if one sells a car and just doesn't tell the insurance company? Are there any consequences?

If the car is still "on cover" then if it is involved in an accident then that cover can be invoked and your record will carry a claim.

For the record, many insurers now state in their policy that cover ceases upon sale of the car. This is designed for cases like the OP's and to try and avoid the Insurers liability under the RTA (If the new owner does not Insure the vehicle). Although it's worth noting that there is no guarantee that this wording would stand up in court as I do not think it has been tested yet and (Very large injury) claims under this section have a tendancy to end up in the Court of Appeals.
