    what gives? fairly new camera (1 year old), gave it an overnight charge after not being used for a while, but get error as in title- then it just shuts down..?

    This appears to be fairly normal for these. One potential solution is to plug it in and switch it off via the power button and it should then charge.

    Replacement batteries are also available from various outlets at fairly cheap rates too.

    tried all that, no luck.

    Buying a replacement as part of 'accessory pack'- with a carry pouch - is cheaper than buying battery alone!?

    That said, the only way to be sure of a genuine battery is to buy from an authorised dealer.

    With yours it may be that you left it completely discharged for a time, whilst still in the camera, sure way to mess up a lithium battery, as the device will drag the voltage down below it's safe threshold.
