Yes, you can use then in a crumble or in a tart. They will probably need sugar added

I freeze them and then use them in sugar free jellies.

Wine! I know, I'll get a reputation as a dipsomaniac, but it makes a superb rich wine, more like a heavy port.

It's easy to do.... Also easy to overdo it

I have 6 bushes, purposely planted as I eat blackcurrants every day of the year, I was widowed two years ago, so am only catering for one these days. My aim with the blackcurrants now is not jam or pies but purely for eating rawafter freezing and they are sweeter after freezing btw. To get plump currants, I prune so that I cut out quite a few of the old stems, the ones that will cause fruit to hit the ground or those that clog up the centre of the bushes. This leaves me with fewer fruit-bearing branches and all my currants now are plump and juicy. I have staggered picking and tend to hand pick but it is not unpleasant as I sit down

My currants are all in the freezer now. I have 4 ben sarek, which are compact bushes and planted quite close together and 2 three year old ben conan, which fruits a month before ben sarek and they are more upright

    I love blackcurrants
